Book Description
"Simulators currently provide an alternative to aircraft when it comes to training requirements, both for the military and for commercial airlines. For the U.S. Air Force, in particular, simulation for training offers a cost-effective way, and in many instances a safer way in comparison with live flying, to replicate real-world missions. Current technical issues related to simulation for training include simulation fidelity and multi-level security, among others, which will need to be addressed in order for the Air Force to take full advantage of this technology. The workshop held in November, 2014 examined the current status of simulation training, alternative uses, current and future technologies, and how the combination of simulation and live training can improve aircrew training. The scope of the workshop focused on technologies and practices that could be applicable to high-end aircraft simulations."-- Publisher's description

Book Description
Defense forces have always invested a great deal of their resources in training. In recent times, changes in the complexity and intensity of operations have reaffirmed the importance of ensuring that warfighters are adequately prepared for the environments in which they are required to work. The emergence of new operational drivers such as asymmetric threats, urban operations, joint and coalition operations and the widespread use of military communications and information technology networks has highlighted the importance of providing warfighters with the competencies required to act in a coordinated, adaptable fashion, and to make effective decisions in environments characterized by large amounts of sometimes ambiguous information. While investment in new technologies can make available new opportunities for action, it is only through effective training that personnel can be made ready to apply their tools in the most decisive and discriminating fashion. There are many factors which can have an impact on the efficacy of training and many issues to consider when designing and implementing training strategies. These issues are often complex and nuanced, and in order to grasp them fully a significant investment of time and energy is required. However, the requirement to respond quickly to ever-changing technology, a high operational tempo and minimal staffing may preclude many in today's defense forces from seeking out all such resources on their own. This edited collection provides brief, easy-to-understand summaries of the key issues in defense training and simulation, as well as guidance for further reading. It consists of a collection of short essays, each of which addresses a fundamental issue in defense training and simulation, and features an up-to-date reference list to enable the reader to undertake further investigation of the issues addressed. In essence, this book provides the optimum starting point, or first resource, for readers to come to terms with the important issues associated with defense training and simulation. The contributions are written by leading scholars from military research institutions in the US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, as well as selected researchers from academic and private sector research institutions.

Book Description
This two-volume set LNCS 10909 and 10910 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 10th International Conference on Virtual, Augmented and Mixed Reality, VAMR 2018, held as part of HCI International 2018 in Las Vegas, NV, USA. HCII 2018 received a total of 4346 submissions, of which 1171 papers and 160 posters were accepted for publication after a careful reviewing process. The 65 papers presented in this volume were organized in topical sections named: interaction, navigation, and visualization in VAMR; embodiment, communication, and collaboration in VAMR; education, training, and simulation; VAMR in psychotherapy, exercising, and health; virtual reality for cultural heritage, entertainment, and games; industrial and military applications.

Book Description
Simulations have been a fixture of aviation training for many years. Advances in simulator technology now enable modern flight simulation to mimic very closely the look and feel of real world flight operations. In spite of this, responsible researchers, trainers, and simulation developers should look beyond mere simulator fidelity to produce meaningful training outcomes. Optimal simulation training development can unquestionably benefit from knowledge and understanding of past, present, and future research in this topic area. As a result, this volume of key writings is invaluable as a reference, to help guide exploration of critical research in the field. By providing a mix of classic articles that stand the test of time, and recent writings that illuminate current issues, this volume informs a broad range of topics relevant to simulation training in aviation.

Book Description
What qualifications determine whether a fighter pilot is experienced? Surveys of expert pilots revealed that, while flying time is an element of the experience needed for both combat and staff jobs, other things are also important. The Air Force needs to measure and credit different types of experience-including time spent in advanced simulator systems-when revising its definitions of pilot experience.

Book Description
This report presents an organized body of information useful for dealing with those human factors problems frequently encountered in the development of the Weapons System Trainer. Emphasis is given throughout to the general problems involved in developing the complete training system rather than to the analysis of details specific to given training systems. It summarizes basic human factors information which influences the design and construction of training devices. Successive chapters of the report are devoted to determining training needs, developing the environment for learning, understanding simulation requirements for training, developing a measurement capability, and discussing the human engineering problems in trainer design. As it provides a considerable background of human factors information pertinent to the synthetic ground environment, this report will be of interest to individuals directly concerned with Weapons System Training programs, preparing trainer specifications, developing training standards, and testing and evaluating simulation equipment.
