Book Description
Excerpt from The Agricultural Outlook for 1935 This report presents, therefore, a summary of the outlook based upon more complete information than has heretofore been available for use in appraising the probable trends of agriculture. This report for 1935 will be the only report issued by this Bureau until the summer of 1935, when the usual summer outlook reports will appear, if there is no change in the outlook program. This report represents the national view point primarily. Most of the State agricultural colleges and extension services will prepare reports, applying particularly to conditions in their respective States, for the use of their extension workers. Any farmer who receives a copy of this, the Federal report, is urged to secure a copy of any reports that may be distributed by his State extension service for consideration in connection with his individual problems. Book Description
Excerpt from The 1930 Agricultural Outlook for California According to the Federal Outlook Report the apple industry of the United States has made a considerable recovery from the disturbed conditions which accompanied the rapid and excessive expansion of commercial plantings in the Northwest and other sections about 20 years ago. The drastic adjustments which followed this period of over-planting have gradually placed the industry on a sounder economic basis. There are still sufficient young trees in commercial orchards, however, to maintain production at a high level for a period of years, and in seasons when weather and other growing conditions are especially favorable production will be so heavy as to be burden some. In 33 of the states which produce over 90 per cent of the United States apple crop, 25 to 30 per cent of the trees in commercial orchards were less than 9 years old at the beginning of 1928, and 65 to 70 per cent were less than 19 years old. In View of this proportion of young trees in commercial orchards together with the general tendencies toward an increased bearing life and an increased productive capacity per tree, owing to improved orchard manage ment and to the larger proportion of orchards on better locations. It seems reasonable to expect a further increase in commercial produc tion for several years. This prospective increase in commercial pro duction, however, will be partially offset by the declining production in family orchards, which contain nearly one-third of the apple trees in the United States. Book Description
Excerpt from The Agricultural Outlook for 1925 Growers of spring wheat, especially those who may expect to benefit from the tariff, should be cautious about increasing their acreage over last year. The production of flax, on the other hand, is still somewhat under domestic consumption and flax prices for the 1925 crop will probably be relatively higher than wheat. Some slight shift from wheat to flax, therefore, may be profitable. A marked shortage of hogs during the coming year appears probable and hog prices should advance to much higher levels. Increased breeding for fall farrowing, therefore, should be profitable. The feeding demand for 1925 feed crops evidently will be smaller than during the present crop year. Corn and oat acreages, therefore, should not be increased especially by farmers who sell their crop. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Agricultural Outlook for 1936 During the 1934 - 35 fertilizer season the fertilizer industry operated under a code of the National Recovery Administration. The effect of the code was to raise and maintain prices. These codes were terminated in May 1935. The 1934 - 35 fertilizer tonnage was 10 percent larger than in the preceding Season in the 12 Southern States as shown by fertilizer-tag sales and 26 percent larger in 5 Midwestern States. Combined sales in the two areas were 11 per cent larger than in the preceding season and the highest since the 1930 - 31 season. With but little change in income from the 1935 crops of cotton and to bacco than that secured a year earlier, no marked increase in fertilizer use is expected during the coming year.
