Resumen: La operación de sistemas de transmisión desde la óptica de los niveles de tensión en las barras y pérdidas en el sistema de potencia, es un problema de optimización matemática de programación no lineal entera mixta con variables de decisión continuas como los niveles de tensión y discretas como la compensación reactiva (condensadores/reactores) y la posición de Tap's en transformadores. Esta tesis presenta un modelo que es resuelto con Algoritmos Genéticos (AG) el cual plantea propuestas para la ubicación y dimensión óptima de compensación reactiva y variación de Tap's, minimizando pérdidas y garantizando una operación de calidad para el sistema de transmisión. Se proponen tres casos de estudio para el Sistema de Transmisión Nacional (STN) Colombiano: En el primer caso, se evalúa el estado actual del sistema con variables tomadas en tiempo real para un periodo de un día. En el segundo se optimiza la compensación reactiva existente, minimizando pérdidas y mejorando los perfiles de tensión en los nodos del sistema y en el tercer caso se realiza un estudio para la Compensación Óptima de Reactivos (COR) del STN con la compensación existente, evaluando la necesidad de instalar nuevos equipos para obtener la optimalidad en cuanto a reducción de pérdidas, costos de inversión y mejorar los perfiles de tensión en las barras.

La potencia reactiva es un concepto abstracto y difícil de definir, especialmente en sistemas con alto desbalance y presencia de armónicos, se trata de una potencia circulante entre el campo magnético y el campo eléctrico, sin ser realmente generada o consumida. Sin embargo, este intercambio energético produce corrientes circulantes que, a su vez, generan perdidas de potencia activa en las líneas de transmisión. Por ello, es importante buscar formas de compensar este fenómeno, especialmente en niveles de distribución. Este libro muestra un enfoque formal para abordar este problema empleado métodos de optimización matemática. Así mismo, se extiende el concepto de compensación a problemas de armónicos (filtros activos), compensación de la corriente por el neutro (desbalance) y compensación de energía mediante el uso de elementos almacenadores. La optimización matemática resulta en una herramienta versátil y práctica para abordar estos problemas, generando un marco formal que permite no solo para analizar sistemáticamente los fenómenos físicos, sino también implementar algoritmos de compensación sobre convertidores de potencia.
