Book Description
The research objective is to develop a methodology for the extraction of bio- and geophysical variables from Synthetic Aperture Radars (SAR) and for their use in the perspective of maize monitoring in an operational context. SARs interest agronomists because they present some advantages for vegetation monitoring. However, the actual revisit cycle of SARs is not sufficient for crop monitoring. The image processing chain we developed overcomes this issue and meets the 4 requirements for operational crop monitoring: a high temporal resolution, a high geometric accuracy, a short processing time and the preservation of the signal content. From the literature, we know that the interactions between the signal backscattered by the vegetation and by the underlying soil are very complex. To understand these interactions, we carried out very intensive ground campaigns. The resulting data set is very rich. It covers 3 growing seasons during which 30 ERS SAR images and 13 RADARSAT SAR images were acquired and processed. In total, 612 fields, i.e. 581 maize fields and 31 sugar beet fields were located and visited. These field campaigns represent 2500 field visits and more or less 7500 measurements of 8 variables. One of the major outputs of this research comes from the analysis of the temporal behaviour of the SAR signal distribution at both field and regional levels. The SAR signal is analysed by the mean of the per-field backscattering coefficient. Previous results concerning the respective contribution of soil and crop are confirmed. The research also addresses the use of several regional indicators. We point out a drop of per-field variation coefficient averaged at regional level and we link it to the decrease of the infra-parcel variability of the soil roughness and to the progressive masking effect of the crop canopy on different sources of variability. The spatial variability of the ERS per-field backscattering coefficients is related to the variability of the sowing dates. Finally, existing and new versions of the cloud model are calibrated and validated. The cloud model is adapted to account for the data available from the field campaigns. The results show that SAR do not allow the prediction of the maize biomass at the field level but they can be used to give an indication on the crop status at a regional level.

Book Description
The best single reference for both the theory and practice of soil physical measurements, Methods, Part 4 adopts a more hierarchical approach to allow readers to easily find their specific topic or measurement of interest. As such it is divided into eight main chapters on soil sampling and statistics, the solid, solution, and gas phases, soil heat, solute transport, multi-fluid flow, and erosion. More than 100 world experts contribute detailed sections.

Book Description
Integrating decades of research conducted by leading scientists in the field, Remote Sensing of Energy Fluxes and Soil Moisture Content provides an overview of state-of-the-art methods and modeling techniques employed for deriving spatio-temporal estimates of energy fluxes and soil surface moisture from remote sensing. It also underscores the range of such techniques available nowadays as well as the operationally distributed networks that provide today in-situ validated relevant observations. The book brings together three types of articles: Comprehensive reviews that examine the developments in concepts, methods, and techniques employed in deriving land surface heat fluxes as well as soil surface moisture on field, regional, and large scales, paying particular emphasis to the techniques exploiting Earth Observation (EO) technology Detailed insights into the principles and operation of the most widely applied approaches for the quantification and analysis of surface fluxes and soil moisture with case studies that directly show the great applicability of remote sensing in this field, or articles discussing specific issues in the retrievals of those parameters from space Focused articles integrating current knowledge and scientific understanding in the remote sensing of energy fluxes and soil moisture, that are highlighting the main issues, challenges, and future prospects of this emerging technology. Designed with different users in mind, the book is organized in four more or less independent units that make specific information easy to find. It presents a discussion on the future trends and prospects, underlying the scientific challenges that need to be addressed adequately in order to derive more accurate estimates of those parameters from space.

Book Description
Our planet is nowadays continuously monitored by powerful remote sensors operating in wide portions of the electromagnetic spectrum. Our capability of acquiring detailed information on the environment has been revolutionized by revealing its inner structure, morphology and dynamical changes. The way we now observe and study the evolution of the Earths status has even radically influenced our perception and conception of the world we live in. The aim of this book is to bring together contributions from experts to present new research results and prospects of the future developments in the area of geosciences and remote sensing, emerging research directions are discussed. The volume consists of twenty-six chapters, encompassing both theoretical aspects and application-oriented studies. An unfolding perspective on various current trends in this extremely rich area is offered. The book chapters can be categorized along different perspectives, among others, use of active or passive sensors, employed technologies and configurations, considered scenario on the Earth, scientific research area involved in the studies.

Book Description
Selected from papers presented at the 8th Scientific Computation in Electrical Engineering conference in Toulouse in 2010, the contributions to this volume cover every angle of numerically modelling electronic and electrical systems, including computational electromagnetics, circuit theory and simulation and device modelling. On computational electromagnetics, the chapters examine cutting-edge material ranging from low-frequency electrical machine modelling problems to issues in high-frequency scattering. Regarding circuit theory and simulation, the book details the most advanced techniques for modelling networks with many thousands of components. Modelling devices at microscopic levels is covered by a number of fundamental mathematical physics papers, while numerous papers on model order reduction help engineers and systems designers to bring their modelling of industrial-scale systems within the reach of present-day computational power. Complementing these more specific papers, the volume also contains a selection of mathematical methods which can be used in any application domain.
