Book Description
Cracks and Fracture consists of nine chapters in logical sequence. In two introductory chapters, physical processes in the vicinity of the crack edge are discussed and the fracture process is described. Chapter 3 develops general basic concepts and relations in crack mechanics, such as path independent integrals, stress intensity factors and energy flux into the crack edge region. Chapters 4-7 deal with elastostatic cracks, stationary or slowly moving elastic-plastic cracks, elastodynamic crack mechanics and elastoplastic aspects of fracture, including dynamic fracture mechanics. Appendices include general formulae, the basic theory of analytic functions, introduction to Laplace and Hankel transforms and description of certain basic relations, for instance for stress waves in solids. There is an extensive bibliography, containing references to both classical and recent work, and a comprehensive index. Book Description
The subject theory combines new methods for the computation of machine parts and equipment components with a consideration of phenomena significantly affected by the structural inhomogeneousness of technological materials (the process of fracture, scale effect, etc.). A characteristic feature of the new methods is the application of mathematical statistics and probability concepts. The new strength theory and its practical application is developed in the mechanical engineering field. It is dedicated to mechanical engineers, metallographers, and designers concerned with general questions of strength as well as with practical computations and experimental investigations of the strength of materials and machine and structural parts. Book Description
The theory presented above does not in any way pretend toward universality. It is only one of many possible variants of a statistical description of the role of different types of defects present in real materials. This variant seems to us, however, one of the most sensible, since as the distribution function choice is made of the gaussian function, which has recommended itself so well in considering a number of allied questions. Book Description
Created in 1975, LMT-Cachan is a joint laboratory École Normale Superieure de Cachan, Pierre & Marie Curie (Paris 6) University and the French Research Council CNRS (Department of Engineering Sciences). The Year 2000 marked the 25th anniversary of LMT. On this occasion, a series of lectures was organized in Cachan in September-October, 2000. This publication contains peer-reviewed proceedings of these lectures and is aimed to present engineers and scientists with an overview of the latest developments in the field of damage mechanics. The formulation of damage models and their identification procedures were discussed for a variety of materials.
