D. 1830, in the fifty-fourth year of the Independence of the United States of America, CARTER, ANDREWS, & Co., of the said district, have deposited in this office the title of a book, the right whereof they claim as proprietors, in the words following, to wit: "A Geography of Worcester County; for young children, containing, 1. A topographical and historical sketch of every town. 2. A general view of the county and the employments of the people. 3. A glossary, explaining the geographical, and other difficult terms. Excerpt from Geography of Worcester County: For Young Children Embracing The pupil should be provided with'a geography and map of Worcester County, and a small black board 18 inches long by 15 broad. If this cannot be easily procured a slate and pencil will very well answer the purpose. Let his attention first be directed to the map and inform him that the top is north, the bottom south, the right hand east, 'and the left hand west. Let him find on the map the town Where he resides, and observe carefully its shape, its ponds, its rivers, and its mountains. All these he is to draw from the map upon his small black board with chalk, and to draw them over and over again, till he can do it accurately from his memory alone. N ext the boundaries of the town are to be learned. The pupil may then leave the map and see what is said of the town in the geography. He Will find the town in its alphabetical place among the towns of the county. To show the pupil that he'can understand the whole matter, and that it is one of his own concern, he may be encouraged to consider what things there may be wor thy of notice in the town besides those mentioned in the book, as mills, or factories, ponds, streams, hills, or moun tains. Excerpt from The Physical Geography of Worcester Massachusetts But no sooner do we reach the summit of Millstone Hill than we begin to descend the southern slope to Belmont Street. Here is Bell Pond, formerly called Bladder Pond, one of the three natural ponds of Worcester. We con tinne directly south from Bell Pond, the mpe at times being almost precipitous, and descend in all 280 feet into the narrow gorge, through which Shrewsbury Street and the Boston Albany Railroad enter the city. As you have many times passed through this on your way to and from the beautiful lake beyond, have you ever asked yourself the questiom - Why is there this sudden break between Millstone Hill and the highland south of the Boston Albany Railroad? Thus the very landscape about us is teeming with questions. On crossing the railroad, con tinning to the south, we immediately ascend a steep slope, and at the highest points on'this hill find ourselves 700 feet above the sea, about 60 feet below the highest part of Mill stone Hill. Over the crest of this hill passes Plantation Street, which we follow, and thence cross to Providence Street hill about 100 feet lower. But here the elevated land, which north of the Boston Albany Railroad is a ridge about half a mile wide at the top and two miles wide at its base, becomes broad and triangular, gradual] y sloping on the east to Lake Quinsigamond and Quinsigamond River, and on the west and southwest sloping quite abruptly to the valley of Mill Brook and the Blackstone. This broad area has many rounded hills and is a rolling upland drained by many brooks, the longer and larger of which flow to the east and southeast because of the longer slopes.
