Book Description
This book presents over 50 watercolors, drawings and hand-colored woodblock prints made by two Greenlanders, Aron from Kangeq and Isak from Igdlorpait, in the mid- to late-nineteenth century. Both artists were invalids and unable to pursue the usual occupation of seal hunting from a kayak, Aron due to tuberculosis and Isak who had a paralyzed right arm. The works by Aron from Kangeq presented here were discovered only in the late 1970s long after all of his other watercolors had foundtheir way to museums in Denmark, Greenland and Norway, and include the previously unknown sources for some of his most iconic images. How they were collected in 1860 by a student from Williams College and discovered over a century later makes a fascinating story that also sheds an interesting light on the interactions of an isolated Arctic colony with the outside world at that early time. A booklet of watercolors by the goat-herder Isak from the Moravian mission settlement of Igdlorpait is also published here for the first time. This book will therefore be welcomed by anyone with an interest in early Eskimo graphic art or Greenlandic society over a hundred years ago.
