Book Description
Excerpt from The American Presbyterian and Theological Review, 1864, Vol. 2 We now leave the author Of this laborious and important historical work, and resent the results Of our own investiga tion concerning the Eatin Patriarchate. We confine ourselves to the period which may be called emphatically the patri archal eriod in the development of the hierarchial organiza tion 0' the church, and the common basis Of the Greek and Latin hierarchy, but at. A point, when the Latin patriarch already raised the claim of a still superior dignity and autho rity above all the Greek patriarchs of the East. The full development Of the pa. Acy proper was the work Of the Middle Ages, and woul carry us beyond the limits of the work which we placed at the head of this article. The original organization Of Christianity under its visible form as an institution not Of, but in, and for, this world, was the apostolical, which stands by itself, different from all subse quent organizations, and yet the fountain head from which they have derived whatever Is essential and permanently valuable in them. For the apostles are not dead, but still live in and for the church they founded, and speak through every true servant Of Christ and minister Of the gospel, whether he be a Greek or Latin metropolitan, or an Anglican bishop, or a Presbyterian pastor, or a Congregational preacher. Book Description
Excerpt from The Presbyterian and Reformed Review, Vol. 6: July, 1895 Approaching now the question of his theology, we may ask the question which it is well to apply to all preachers and all thinkers of all schools, Christ's own question concerning Himself, What think ye of Christ? It is wonderfully true of Bishop Brooks that his whole preaching was a prolonged and glowing tribute of praise, and honor, and glory to our Lord Jesus Christ. It is said that he once answered, being asked what sermon he would preach, I only have one sermon. He might have adopted in his own way the exclamation of Count Zinzendorf, I have but one passion; it is He. His whole thinking continually revolves about His Per son, in reverent delight over His humanity and His divinity, glory ing in His life and death, and appealing to all men to believe and obey Him. While we must rejoice in this and in the saving power that therefore followed his ministry, the moment we press further into his doctrine concerning our Lord's Person, the more surprising, and, to our view, the more deplorable, is his evident departure from the theology of the Episcopal Church, as from the view of the im mense majority of Christians in all ages. His doctrine of the Per son of Christ - ever the key to any man's whole idea of the Gos pel - colors, and, as we think, greatly lowers his ideas both of the man Christ Jesus, of God Himself, of humanity, redeemed and un redeemed, altering with it the work of Christ for our salvation. His view of Christ is expressed with great clearness in a sermon with the significant title of, The Eternal Humanity, on the text. Book Description
Excerpt from The Boston Review, Vol. 4: Devoted to Theology and Literature As evidence, however, that the doctrine is not contrary to reason, and that nature does not reject or cry out against it, it may be stated that, like the custom of sacrifices, the notion has been very prevalent through the world, that, in some way, the Deity has a three-fold manner of existence. This fact can only be accounted for on the supposition that the doctrine of the Trinity was revealed to the patriarchs, and, by tradition, some traces of it were preserved and spread abroad among the nations. It is well known that the ancient Egyptians, and the eastern nations generally believed in a Trinity. The missionaries find the Hindoos believing it in modern times, and find them also tracing the notion back to a very ancient date.
