Trilingual Education of Uyghur Children
Author: Wei Xiaobao
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1040020615
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 229
Book Description
Given the differences in the orthographic structure of the Uyghur, Chinese and English languages, this study used a mixed-method approach to systematically describe and analyze the phonological awareness of Uyghur bilingual children as English learners and its contributions to their trilingual literacy acquisition and development. Focusing on the development of these learners' phonological awareness in Uyghur, Chinese and English, this study explored the influences of Uyghur and Chinese learning on the formation of their English phonological awareness and the roles of different components of phonological awareness in their trilingual literacy development. Based on the characteristics of the phonetic structure in Uyghur, Chinese and English and the development of Uyghur children's phonological awareness in these languages, a Chinese phonetic identification training and Uyghur–Chinese–English comprehensive phonetic training program (including intensive phoneme category contrast training and phonics training) was designed to explore whether such targeted phonetic identification training can effectively improve these children's phonological awareness in Chinese and English and thus further promote their trilingual literacy development. This book will appeal to researchers and students interested in the fields of psycholinguistics, language acquisition and multilingual education.

Author: Camilla Bardel
Publisher: Lulu.com
ISBN: 130088407X
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 179
Book Description
This book is intended for researchers and students in the field of second language (L2) acquisition. As its title suggests, the book discusses L2 vocabulary acquisition, knowledge and use, and examines them from the perspectives of assessment and corpus analysis. The chapters also address some additional central research issues: the role of word frequency in the input, the difference between single words and multiword units, and the distinction between vocabulary of oral and written language. The first three chapters of the book present critical reviews of different aspects of vocabulary acquisition. The other four chapters contain empirical studies that relate to the central themes of the book. The data in the studies draw on a variety of source and target languages: English, French, Italian, Swedish, Hebrew and Japanese. The book offers some new insights into the field of vocabulary and suggests avenues of research.

Teaching English Reading in the Chinese-Speaking World
Author: Clay Williams
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 9811006431
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 194
Book Description
This book investigates inherent, structural differences in the Chinese and English writing systems which predispose learners from childhood to develop specific literacy-learning strategies, which can impair later efforts at learning foreign language literacy if the foreign language script varies significantly from the native language script. It compares educational practices and philosophies in Chinese and English-speaking classrooms, and examines the psychological underpinnings of these literacy learning strategies. This book presents psychometric testing of adult reading strategy defaults and examines case study data, revealing that Chinese students are susceptible to misapplying Chinese character-level processing strategies to English word identification tasks, which decreases reading efficiency, and ultimately can lead to learning failure. Finally, a new educational framework is proposed for teaching beginning language-specific word identification and literacy-learning skills to learners whose first language script varies significantly from that of the target language.

Focusing on EFL Reading
Author: Rahma Al-Mahrooqi
Publisher: Cambridge Scholars Publishing
ISBN: 1443860700
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 458
Book Description
Reading, a complex and multi-faceted skill, is essential for life and academic success. While its mysteries still baffle first-language research, the nature of reading in a foreign language presents an even greater puzzle. However, given reading’s importance for EFL students who study their specializations in English, and whose future employment may depend on their competence in it, researchers must continue to investigate foreign language reading and devise ways of improving students’ capacity for it. Hence, this book, with its thorough coverage of up-to-date theory, practice and research, will be of great value in today’s educational context. As they strive to understand reading and help EFL students to acquire it, researchers and language teachers will find much of value here.
