Book Description
Excerpt from The History of Modern Painting, Vol. 4 of 4 50 long as the acquisition of sunlight was the point in question, representations from the life of artisans in town and country stood at the centre itself of artistic efforts, because the conception and technical methods of the new art could be tested upon them with peculiar success. And through these pictures painting came into closer sympathy with the heart-beat of the age. At an epoch when the labouring man as such, and the political and social movement in civilization, had become matters of absorbing interest, the picture of artisans necessarily claimed an important place in art; and one of the best sides of the moral value of modern painting lies in its no longer holding itself in indifference aloof from these themes. When the century began, Hector and Agamemnon alone were qualified for artistic treatment, but in the natural course of development the disinherited, the weary and heavily-laden likewise acquired rights of citizenship. In the passage where Vasari speaks of the Madonnas of Cimabue, comparing them with the older Byzantine Virgins, he says finely that the Florentine master brought more goodness of heart into painting. And perhaps the historians of the future will say the same about the art of the present. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from A Hand-Book of the History of Painting, Vol. 2 The Editor is conscious that this second part of Kugler's Hand-hook of Painting appears under great disadvantages. The volume already published bears on its title-page the name of an editor, in whom literary acquirements are combined With a most extensive knowledge, and With first-rate excellence in the practice of that art to Which the book relates The reader will remember that such qualities can not be expected often to meet in one and the same person, as the editor of a popular manual, and he Will look with indulgence on the remarks of a mere amateur, in Whom scanty opportunities for observa tion, and a sincere love of the productions of art, Will have to supply the place of so much*. Book Description
Excerpt from The History of Modern Painting, Vol. 1 of 3 N 0 book, hitherto, has embraced the history of European painting in the nineteenth century. And modern art, like modern culture, is to be considered as a whole. The history of the art of our own country is not intelligible if one does not know of contemporary movements abroad. The gaze of the historian therefore must not be fixed upon one country alone, but must embrace Europe, - indeed, the whole world. Book Description
Excerpt from The History of Painting From the Fourth to the Early Nineteenth Century, Vol. 2 of 2 As he himself experienced nothing sad, so his art is one of sunny joyfulness. As his life was passed without storms, without catastrophes, so he never painted thrill ing or convulsive pictures. Even when the subject is terrible, or violently dramatic, he remains mild and soft, pleasing and friendly. As his portrait has more a typical than an individual effect, so in his paintings everything individual is either eliminated or changed into the typical. As he never had conflicts either with his employers or with his assistants, but was as pliant and lovable in obeying as in giving orders, so there are no dissonances in his art. Everything that is hard and angular in nature is softened and rounded; and not only the individual forms but the composition moves in pliant, rhythmic lines. As his own life was a beautiful harmony, so his paintings fuse the gay many-sided ness of life into soft harmonies in which no movement or fold of drapery disturbs the pleasing unison.
