Book Description
Excerpt from An Introduction to the Theory of Statistics History of the Origin and Progress 3 of the work, he tells us, Many people were at first surprised at my using the new words, Statistics and Statistical, as it was supposed that some term in our own language might have expressed the same meaning. But in the course of a very extensive tour, through the northern parts of Eurppe, which I happened to take in 1786, I found that in Germany they were engaged in a species of political enquiry, to which they had given the name of Statistics;4 as I thought that a new word might attract more public attention, I resolved on adopting it, and I hepe that it is now completely naturalised and incorporated with our language. This hope was certainly justified, but the meaning of the word underwent rapid development during the half century or so following its introduction. Book Description
Knowledge updating is a never-ending process and so should be the revision of an effective textbook. The book originally written fifty years ago has, during the intervening period, been revised and reprinted several times. The authors have, however, been thinking, for the last few years that the book needed not only a thorough revision but rather a substantial rewriting. They now take great pleasure in presenting to the readers the twelfth, thoroughly revised and enlarged, Golden Jubilee edition of the book. The subject-matter in the entire book has been re-written in the light of numerous criticisms and suggestions received from the users of the earlier editions in India and abroad. The basis of this revision has been the emergence of new literature on the subject, the constructive feedback from students and teaching fraternity, as well as those changes that have been made in the syllabi and/or the pattern of examination papers of numerous universities. Book Description
Both a comprehensive overview and a treatment at the appropriate level of detail, this textbook explains thermodynamics and generalizes the subject so it can be applied to small nano- or biosystems, arbitrarily far from or close to equilibrium. In addition, nonequilibrium free energy theorems are covered with a rigorous exposition of each one. Throughout, the authors stress the physical concepts along with the mathematical derivations. For researchers and students in physics, chemistry, materials science and molecular biology, this is a useful text for postgraduate courses in statistical mechanics, thermodynamics and molecular simulations, while equally serving as a reference for university teachers and researchers in these fields.

Book Description
Excerpt from Elements of Statistics This book was first published in 1901, and was then based on lectures delivered at the School of Economics in the'five years following its foundation in 1895. Two further editions have been issued in which the text was revised without any important alteration, and an Appendix added dealing with the second approximation to the normal curve of error, and sub sequently some pages of addenda were circulated. In the present edition Part I remains substantially as it was in 1901, except that Section III of Chapter III has been replaced by a new illustration, the chapter on Averages has been rearranged, a chapter on the measurement of dispersion takes the place of the former Chapter V, in Chapter IX the treatment of retail index-numbers has been reconsidered, and the second section of Chapter X has been recast. At the same time those parts of the text which were out of date have been replaced by more modern material and the whole has been revised, but with as little alteration of the original as possible, since a revised version may by too much attention to detail destroy the balance of the original. On the other hand, Part II has been completely rewritten and considerably extended, both by the more detailed and extended treatment of theory and by the addition of a number of examples which illustrate the arithmetical use of the formulae and Show the scope of the application of the theory. For the convenience of those who possess the earlier edition, to whom the revised Part I contains little that is new, Part II is issued separately while for those whose mathematical know ledge is too slight to allow them to follow the treatment in Part II in its new form Part I is also issued separately. But the two Parts together are essentially one book with a common index and with cross references from one to another. Book Description
Excerpt from An Elementary Manual of Statistics This manual is intended for the use Of those who desire some knowledge of statistical methods and statistical results without going deeply into technicalities or undertaking mathematical analysis; It is hoped that it will be of service to all who have occasion to use statistics in their own business or profession, or who take an intelligent interest in public affairs. It is also designed as a first course in statistics for students who wish to proceed further in the subject and, if it serves its purpose will stimulate interest in the many fascinating problems that await solution, and that can only be attacked by the methods of modern mathematical statistics. Book Description
Taken literally, the title "All of Statistics" is an exaggeration. But in spirit, the title is apt, as the book does cover a much broader range of topics than a typical introductory book on mathematical statistics. This book is for people who want to learn probability and statistics quickly. It is suitable for graduate or advanced undergraduate students in computer science, mathematics, statistics, and related disciplines. The book includes modern topics like non-parametric curve estimation, bootstrapping, and classification, topics that are usually relegated to follow-up courses. The reader is presumed to know calculus and a little linear algebra. No previous knowledge of probability and statistics is required. Statistics, data mining, and machine learning are all concerned with collecting and analysing data.

Book Description
Excerpt from Introduction to Mathematical Statistics There is no real reason why the theory of statistical methods should remain in obscurity. The necessary mathematics is largely elementary arithmetic and except in a few cases there is no need for higher mathematics. This book presupposes a reasonable familiarity with elementary mathematics only. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from A First Course in Statistics Fifty years ago a large section of the general public were not only uninterested in what we now call the social problem, but they scarcely gave a thought to the existence of such a problem. They felt vaguely perhaps, during periods of acute distress due to lack' of employment, that all was not well and they thought the Govern ment or possibly the big landowner was to blame, but only the more enlightened realized the complexity of the body politic and how fearfully and wonderfully it is made. To-day all this is changed, and comparatively few imagine that a single panacea - the pro hibition of drink, the nationalization of land, or a levy on capital will cure all evils. The very fact that nearly the whole civilized world has given itself up for over four years to the destruction of life and the draggmg down of the social fabric. In all countries on so vast a scale has led to a surfeit and a reaction in which thoughtful men are eager to take part in proclaiming again a common brotherhood and in building a better world. Those who have always been interested in this kind of architecture welcome the change of spirit, but they also recognize the difficulty of the task undertaken and the need for no little mental effort to second the good-will, which is the first essential for success. To pull down no teacher is needed, but we must learn to build. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Foundations of the Theory of Probability The purpose of this monograph is to give an axiomatic foundation for the theory of probability. The author set himself the task of putting in the1r natural place, among the general notions of modern mathematics, the basic concepts of probability theory - concepts which until recently were considered to be quite peculiar.
