Excerpt from The English Church in the Eighteenth Century The authors are indebted to their reviewers for many kind remarks and much careful criticism. They have endeavoured to correct all errors which have been thus pointed out to them. As the nature of this work has sometimes been a little mis apprehended, it should be added that its authors at no time intended it to be a regular history. When they first mapped out their respective shares in the joint undertaking, their design nad been to write a number of short essays relating to many different features in the religion and Church history of England in the Eighteenth Century. This general purpose was adhered to and it was only after much deliberation that the word Chapters was substituted for Essays.' There was, however, one important modification. Fewer subjects were, in the issue, specifically dis cussed, but these more in detail 3 while some questions - such, ' for instance, as that of the Church in the Colonies - were scarcely touched upon. Hence a certain disproportion of treatment, which a general introductory chapter could but partially remedy. But the subject was there treated in what might almost be called a series of essays, leaving many important questions wholly, or nearly wholly, untouched, and expressing only on particular points the individual opinion of each author. Excerpt from The English Church From the Accession of George I: To the End of the Eighteenth Century, 1714-1800 Interest in the history of the English Church has been steadily increasing of late years, since the great importance of the Church as a factor in the development of the national life and character from the earliest times has come to be more fully and clearly recognised. But side by side with this increase of interest in the history of our Church, the want has been felt of a more complete presentment of it than has hitherto been attempted. Certain portions, indeed, have been written with a fullness and accuracy that leave nothing to be desired; but many others have been dealt with, if at ally only in manuals and textbooks which are generally dull by reason of excessive compression, or in sketches which, however brilliant and suggestive, are not histories. What seemed to be wanted was a continuous and adequate history in volumes of a moderate size and price, based upon a careful study of original authorities and the best ancient and modern writers.
