Book Description
For much of the 20th century, the underground pornography industry - made up of amateurs and hobbyists who created hardcore, explicit "stag films" - went about its business hounded by reformers and law enforcement, from local police departments all the way up to the FBI. Rumors of this illicit activity circulated and became the stuff of urban myth, but this period of pornography history remains murky. Let's Go Stag! reveals the secrets of this underground world. Using the archives of civic groups, law enforcement, bygone government studies and similarly neglected evidence, archivist Dan Erdman reconstructs the means by which stag films were produced, distributed and exhibited, as well as demonstrate the way in which these practices changed with the times, eventually paving the way for the pornographic explosion of the 1970s and beyond. Let's Go Stag! is sure to point the way for countless future researchers and remain the standard work of history for this era of adult film for a long time to come.

Book Description
Nobody forgets their first time--and film directors are no exception. In these vivid and revealing interviews, a collection of filmmakers as diverse as the Coen brothers and Ken Loach, Ang Lee and Kevin Smith, Anthony Minghella and Gary Oldman, Neil Jordan and Mira Nair talk in extraordinary detail and with amazing candor about making their first films. Each chapter focuses on a director's celebrated debut--be it "Angel or "Blood Simple, "Clerks or "Diner, "Muriel's Wedding or "Truly, Madly, Deeply--and tells the inside story: from writing the script to raising the money, from casting the actors to assembling the crew, from shooting to editing, from selling the movie to screening it. Along the way, every aspect of the movie industry is explored: from dealing with agents and moguls for the first time to pitching your movie as a debutante director, from languishing in development hell to confronting test audiences from hell. The questions have been posed by Stephen Lowenstein, a young director with two acclaimed short films to his credit. Remembering the struggle to launch their careers, the directors have opened up about their first films and themselves to an unprecedented degree. Each chapter is not only a memoir of a particular movie, but also an emotional journey in which the director relives the pain and elation, the comedy and tragedy, of making a first feature. For anyone who wants to direct movies, these tales of triumph and disaster, of sleepless nights and nail-biting days, will be enthralling and terrifying in equal measure. For all other film fans, the interviews provide fascinating and entertaining insights into filmmakers who have become household names.

Book Description
The Beat Generation FAQ is an informative and entertaining look at the enigmatic authors and cutting-edge works that shaped this fascinating cultural and literary movement. Disillusioned with the repression and conformity encompassing post-World War II life in the United States, the Beat writers sought creative alternatives to the mind-numbing banality of modern culture. Beat Generation writers were no strangers to controversy: Both Allen Ginsberg's prophetic, William Blakean-style poem “Howl” (1956) and William S. Burroughs' groundbreaking novel Naked Lunch (1959) led to obscenity trials, while Jack Kerouac's highly influential novel On the Road (1957) was blamed by the establishment for corrupting the nation's youth and continues to this day to serve as a beacon of hipster culture and the bohemian lifestyle. The Beat writers shared a vision for a new type of literature, one that escaped the boundaries of academia and employed an organic use of language, inspired by the spontaneity and improvisational nature of jazz music and abstract expressionism (Kerouac coined this writing style “spontaneous prose”). In search of deeper meaning, Beat Generation writers experimented not only with language but also with spirituality, art, drugs, sexuality, and unconventional lifestyles. Although the movement as a whole flamed out quickly in the early 1960s, replaced by the onset of the hippie counterculture, the Beats made an indelible mark on the nation's consciousness and left a long-lasting influence on its art and culture. This book details the movement – its works, creative forces, and its legacy.

Book Description
Every January, from 1996 to 2016, while I was suffering with summer in Rio I received snowy news from the Sundance Festival through Carlos Brandão and his partner Myrna. In those 20 years, Carlos and Myrna were my main source of information about independent world cinema. It is a great joy to see all this material gathered in a book. Carlos was a passionate researcher and, along with Myrna, an experienced reporter. Their interviews and reports on films and directors that have passed through Sundance have the mark of someone who saw everything up close. And knew how to tell it. Carlos Alberto Mattos – Film Critic When Robert Redford founded the nonprofit Sundance Institute in 1981, the intense creativity of American independent cinema in the 70’s was too distant. The Festival came to redefine the characteristics of a cinema that was becoming more conservative and less daring, as a reflection of the Reagan years. Betting on risk and dissonant and plural voices, Sundance knew how to reveal innovative directors and organize “Script Development Programs” in different parts of the world, starting with Brazil. The geopolitics of independent cinema would never be the same. Sundance marked the resumption of Brazilian Cinema after the disastrous government of President Collor. It was one of the first international festival to embrace our cinematography at that time and few critics and journalists followed this movement as closely as Carlos Augusto Brandão. With his inseparable Myrna, Carlos foresaw what was still under construction. He covered the Festival from the start, collecting precious interviews from young new-comers. I cannot remember Sundance without thinking about Carlos, his remarks and always relevant and sensitive questions, publishing stories that dimensioned the revival of Brazilian Cinema. These testimonies comprise this precious "20 Years of Independent Cinema". The interviews gathered here tell not only the story of the renaissance of independent cinema in different latitudes, but also speak of the intense passion that Carlos had for cinema. His texts make him both a witness and co-author of a cinema in transformation. Walter Salles – Film-Maker
