Excerpt from The British Journal of Dermatology, Vol. 3: January-December, 1891 A remarkable example of what may be called the dush-patch erythema, or acne rosacea without acne, occurred in the person of a married lady, aged 83, who came under my care in January of 1889. She had large bat's-wing patches of a deep, dusky red, covering both cheeks, and connected together across the nose by a band which passed up its Sides. The tip of the nose was, however, not in the least red. On these patches there was not, let me say, a single acne pustule, but there were a few small ones on her chin and upper lip. The condition was extremely disfiguring and almost forbade her going into society; but I was assured that what I saw was nothing to what it always became after dinner. There was no redness of the ears. The bat's-wing condition was so perfect that at first I was inclined to believe that it was lupus erythematosus; but on close inspection there was not the slightest tendency to the production of either discs or scars, nor were the areas very abruptly defined. They were stippled all over with red points, and showed also many little sea-weed-like tufts of dilated venules. Excerpt from The British Journal of Dermatology, Vol. 18 In view of the fact that the recent tendency of research into the origin of cancer and malignancy in general has been to give up the infective hypothesis and revert to the older suggestion of developmental sequestration of f tal relics, it is interesting at the present moment to investigate the forerunners of malignancy, and in particular that one which appears most likely to be of congenital and developmental origin, in the hope that through it we may be able to throw some light upon the more important question of malignancy itself. I propose, in the first place, to define exactly what I understand by the term "mole." Clinically, they are seen as circumscribed patches on the skin, which differ greatly in size, appear, as a rule, soon after birth, rarely at birth, grow larger during childhood, and generally remain stationary for the remainder of life. Excerpt from The British Journal of Dermatology, Vol. 21: January-December, 1909 Summary - The histology of the condition is characterised by a lifting up en masse of the horny layers of the epithelium from a rapid exudation of serum tending to collect into lakes on the surface, which exudate is Obviously the result of the striking (edema notice able in the prickle-cell layer, which in its turn is due to the vascular dilatation prevalent in the dermal and hypodermal vessels. These facts, together with the presence of cocci on the surface, probably due merely to accidental contamination, and the absence of any leucocytic infiltration, constitute the most striking histological features. If the exudation of polymorphonuclear leucocytes is considered to be an essential Sign of inflammation, then Ritter's disease is not a dermatitis. Beyond this, however, there are no facts to bring forward, and whilst the thrombosis hypothesis is a possibility, it is, as I am well aware, beset with many difficulties which must be met before it can be accepted.
