The Birthplace
Author: Henry James
Publisher: Hesperus Press
ISBN: 1780940742
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 113
Book Description
In this lesser known classic James explores in miniature the themes of his major fiction, enlivened by a characteristically keen eye for character and a wry appreciation of both pretension and the absurd Blackport-on-Dwindle— "all granite, fog, and female fiction"— has been the Gedges' dull domain for some years. They leap, therefore, at the invitation to become the live-in guardians of the birthplace of their nation's literary hero. Anticipating romance and inspiration— in other words, everything that' s been lacking in their daily lives to date— they find instead that the house casts an altogether more sinister spell. Also included is "The Private Life," another little-known work in which James again considers the relevance of the artist' s persona— a theme with continued relevance in literature and the arts.

Book Description
The story of how a Canadian-born dentist and Houghton entrepreneur changed hockey by openly paying players to come to Michigan's Copper Country to play hockey. In the early days of hockey it was a game for amateurs, however there were rumors that some players were secretly paid. It was not until 1903 that Jack "Doc" Gibson and James R. Dee decided to recruit the best players from Canada and pay them to play for the Portage Lake (Houghton) hockey team. The team won the 1904 U.S. Championship and defeated a team from Montreal for what was billed as the World's Championship. The Birthplace of Jesus Is in Palestine
Author: Toine van Teeffelen
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN:
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 189
Book Description
The Birthplace of Jesus Is in Palestine is a narrative of a Christian family in Bethlehem in the West Bank. Based on diary entries and interviews from 2000 to 2023, the Dutch author—an anthropologist and peace activist—chronicles the spontaneous reactions of his Palestinian children and wife navigating the challenges posed by curfews and checkpoints. Problems of Palestinian school life are shown from the perspective of teachers and students. Against the background of Israeli occupation and settlement building, the intricacies of Palestinian culture in its daily rhythms and domestic spaces come to life. Throughout the pages, the key Palestinian concept of sumud, or steadfastness, is explored. The memoir details acts of creative nonviolent resistance, individual protests, affirmations of cultural identity, and inspiring examples of Muslim-Christian community. The book also reveals unexpected connections between Palestinian culture in the Bethlehem area and broader Christian values and traditions. An afterword reflects upon implications of Israel’s war in Gaza.

Escaping Shame: Mary's Dilemma and the Birthplace of Jesus
Author: N. Clayton Croy
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004370900
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 224
Book Description
The only narratives of Jesus’ birth locate the event in Bethlehem, but the adult Jesus is consistently associated with Nazareth. How do we reconcile these two indisputable facts? Some dismiss Bethlehem as a theologoumenon, a theological fabrication. Others insist on Bethlehem based on the census of Quirinius. In the present volume, N. Clayton Croy argues that both are wrong. Instead Jesus’ birthplace was determined by the scandalous nature of Mary’s pregnancy, with it being necessary for Mary and Joseph to escape the inevitable shame of an ill-timed conception and decamp to a less hostile environment. In this light, a Bethlehem-born Jesus who grew up in Nazareth should never have been considered problematic.
