The Development of Sarajevo During the Period of Austro-Hungarian Administration, 1878-1918
Author: Mary Winifred Davis Sparks

Book Description
This thesis examines the development of the urban fabric in the city of Sarajevo during the period of Austro-Hungarian administration, 1878-1918, a time which left an exuberant and visible testament to the social, cultural and economic vigour of the middle-class inhabitants of the city. Events such as the assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand in 1914 and the siege of Sarajevo during the Bosnian war of 1992-1995 have had a negative effect on Western views of the city's past, obscuring a more positive assessment of development in the Austro-Hungarian period. Previous 'top-down' accounts ofth~ Austro-Hungarian growth of the city have focused largely on the work of the administration in a colonial role. This thesis takes a wider view, using the urban fabric of the time as a key source of evidence for the nature of the economic, social and cultural development which took place. This approach creates a more nuanced picture. While acknowledging strong elements of continuity within the building programme and aspects of the social and cultural life of the city, it shows how the urban elites and developing middle class played an active role post-1878, fashioning the new parts of the city according to their various agendas and adopting lifestyles and patterns of investment , which owed much to central and west-European models. The role of confessional groups is also explored, as well as the integration between immigrant and local populations at middle class level. The Sarajevan version of urban modernity which is analysed in this thesis is thus shown not only to be the result of Austrian-led policies in the public sector, but also of the initiatives of a strong, well-integrated private sector which included a range of 'agencies' from individuals to religious groups, influenced by the social, cultural, architectural and economic stimuli which were affecting urban middle class development throughout Europe.

A History of Yugoslavia
Author: Marie-Janine Calic
Publisher: Purdue University Press
ISBN: 1612495648
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 443
Book Description
Why did Yugoslavia fall apart? Was its violent demise inevitable? Did its population simply fall victim to the lure of nationalism? How did this multinational state survive for so long, and where do we situate the short life of Yugoslavia in the long history of Europe in the twentieth century? A History of Yugoslavia provides a concise, accessible, comprehensive synthesis of the political, cultural, social, and economic life of Yugoslavia—from its nineteenth-century South Slavic origins to the bloody demise of the multinational state of Yugoslavia in the 1990s. Calic takes a fresh and innovative look at the colorful, multifaceted, and complex history of Yugoslavia, emphasizing major social, economic, and intellectual changes from the turn of the twentieth century and the transition to modern industrialized mass society. She traces the origins of ethnic, religious, and cultural divisions, applying the latest social science approaches, and drawing on the breadth of recent state-of-the-art literature, to present a balanced interpretation of events that takes into account the differing perceptions and interests of the actors involved. Uniquely, Calic frames the history of Yugoslavia for readers as an essentially open-ended process, undertaken from a variety of different regional perspectives with varied composite agenda. She shuns traditional, deterministic explanations that notorious Balkan hatreds or any other kind of exceptionalism are to blame for Yugoslavia’s demise, and along the way she highlights the agency of twentieth-century modern mass society in the politicization of differences. While analyzing nuanced political and social-economic processes, Calic describes the experiences and emotions of ordinary people in a vivid way. As a result, her groundbreaking work provides scholars and learned readers alike with an accessible, trenchant, and authoritative introduction to Yugoslavia's complex history.

"The Turk" in the Czech Imagination (1870s-1923)

Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 240
Book Description
"In "The Turk" in the Czech Imagination (1870s-1923), Jitka Malečková describes Czechs' views of the Turks in the last half century of the existence of the Ottoman Empire and how they were influenced by ideas and trends in other countries, including the European fascination with the Orient, images of "the Turk," contemporary scholarship, and racial theories. The Czechs were not free from colonial ambitions either, as their attitude to Bosnia-Herzegovina demonstrates, but their viewpoint was different from that found in imperial states and among the peoples who had experienced Ottoman rule. The book convincingly shows that the Czechs mainly viewed the Turks through the lenses of nationalism and Pan-Slavism - in solidarity with the Slavs fighting against Ottoman rule"--

Pages : 190
Book Description
Excerpt from A Short History of Austria-Hungary and Poland Austria-Hungary, or the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy (Gcr. OsUrreichisck-ungarischt Monarchie or Ostcrreichisck-ungarisches Reich), is the official name of a country situated in central Europe, bounded E. by Russia and Rumania, S. by Rumania, Servia, Turkey and Montenegro, W. by the Adriatic Sea, Italy, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, and the German empire, and N. by the German empire and Russia. It occupies about the sixteenth part of the total area of Europe, with an area (1905) of 239,977 sq. m. The monarchy consists of two independent states: the kingdoms and lands represented in the council of the empire (Rcichsrat), unofficially called Austria or Cislcithania, because its territories lie west of the river Lcitha; and the "lands of St Stephen's Crown," unofficially called Hungary or Transleithania, i*. across the I.eitha. It received its actual name by the diploma of the emperor Francis Joseph I. of the 14th of November 1868, replacing the name of the Austrian Empire under which the dominions under his sceptre were formerly known. The Austro-Hungarian monarchy is very often called unofficially the Dual Monarchy. It had in 1910 a population of 49,454,385 inhabitants, comprising therefore within its borders about one-eighth of the total population of Europe. By the Berlin Treaty of 1878 the principalities of Bosnia and Herzegovina with an area of 19,702 sq. m., and a population (1895) of U59inhabitants, owning Turkey as suzerain, were placed under the administration of Austria-IIungary, and their annexation in 1908 was recognized by the Powers in 1909, so that they became part of the dominions of the monarchy. Modernism: The Creation of Nation-States
Author: Ahmet Ersoy
Publisher: Central European University Press
ISBN: 9637326618
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 497
Book Description
Notwithstanding the advantages of physical power, the struggle for survival among societies is not merely a matter of serial armed clashes but of the nation's spiritual resources that in the end always decide upon the victory. In Europe, there indeed exist independent countries, insignificant from the point of view of the entire civilization, and born by sheer coincidence, yet, this coincidence, this fancy, or diplomatic ploy that created them can just as easily bring them to an end---the nations that count in the political calculations are only the enlightened ones. Therefore, our nation should not merely grow in power, strengthen its character, and foster in people the feeling of love for homeland, but also---inasmuch as it is possible---breath the fresh breeze of humanity's general progress, feed it to the nation, absorb its creative energy. Until now, we have trusted and lived only in the weary conditions, conditions devoid of health-giving elements---now, as a result the nation's heart beats too slowly and its mind works too tediously. We ought to open our windows to Europe, to the wind of continental change and allow it to air our sultry home, since as not all health comes from the inside, not all disease comes from the outside.
