Book Description
Excerpt from The Art of Practical Billiards for Amateurs Having been asked to read the proof-sheets of the Art of Practical Billiards, by major-general Dray son, I may say that I have done so with pleasure, and that I am able to endorse, in nearly every case, the Author's advice, both theoretical and practical. I have not remarked that any points of great importance have been omitted, and I think that there are very few amateurs who may not gain some useful hints from a study of the book, which, as a lover of billiards, I hope will meet with success. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Scientific Billiards
Author: Albert Garnier
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780282400422
Category : Sports & Recreation
Languages : en
Pages : 234
Book Description
Excerpt from Scientific Billiards: Garnier's Practice Shots, With Hints to Amateurs The American game, as it was played a quarter of a century ago, seemed, at the time, to be scarcely susceptible of much improvement in its general principles. Old players can well remember the six-by - twelve tables with six pockets and four balls, the running the spot-ball, the combination-shots of pockets and carroms, etc., when a run of a hundred points was considered marvelous. As professional players became more skillful, the game was made more and more difficult. First, running the spot was barred; then the tables were made with but four pockets; then tables were made without pockets and the push-shot was barred; experts soon became able to make Immense runs in a corner of the table, and nursing the balls in the corner was restricted; later the standard table was reduced in size to five by ten feet, and three balls were used instead of four; the so-called rail-play then came into vogue, and players began to make runs of hundreds; and finally, in the last grand tournament held in this city, playing on the rail was restricted. Amateurs, how ever, seldom possess the dexterity and nerve to make long runs on the rail; and the rules adopted by a committee of experts in 187 3, which are given 111 an Appen dix, are sufficiently rigid for ordinary players. Pages : 476
Book Description
Excerpt from Billiards Expounded to All Degrees of Amateur Players, Vol. 1: The Elementary Side of Billiard-Playing Expounded may meet with a similar fate. Though, whether or no, I take to myself the idea that up to date it is the most serious and genuine attempt to show the theory and practice of the Billiard art in book form. It was my good fortune to secure as a collaborator Mr. S. A. Mussabini, a well-known writer on the game of Billiards. He has acted as a sort Of Boswell to me; for all that is recorded in Billiards Expounded comes from his pen as a condensation and lucid arrange ment of the precepts and principles I have from time to time put before him. How well he has performed his task the reader can now judge. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
