Book Description
Notropis heterodon, the Blackchin Shiner, is a threatened species in northeast Illinois. Historical sites and recommended sites were sampled for presence or absence and habitat data. Notropis heterodon showed a decrease in range by 61%, and a preference for habitats containing sand and vegetation. Notropis heterodon exhibited an opportunistic strategy with reproduction occurring from late May through early August. Length frequency analysis show N. heterodon reaching sexual maturity in the 1+ age group and possibly living to 2+ years. Notropis heterodon had a diet consisting of four main contributors: bosminids, chydorids, ostracods, and dipteran adults, on which N. heterodon feeds on primarily in the morning and at night. The Blackchin Shiner is restricted to the extreme northeast corner of Illinois and requires clear lakes with submerged vegetation and a sandy substrate. These three requirements of the species can be applied to the natural glacial lakes in order to save existing populations.
