Cultivating the Spirit THIS GROUNDBREAKING WORK IS BASED on a five-year study of how students change during the college years and the role college plays in facilitating the development of their spiritual qualities. Students, the authors argue, grapple with the big questions in life: Who am I? What are my values? Do I have a mission in life? Why am I in college? What kind of person do I want to be? What sort of world do I want to help to create? Their answers to these questions help determine their academic and career choices and are tied to the development of personal qualities such as empathy, caring, and social responsibility. The study finds that, while students' religious engagement declines during college, at the same time they become substantially more caring, tolerant, connected with others, and actively egaged in a spiritual quest. Spiritual growth also enhances academic performance, leadership development, and satisfaction with college. The study provides strong evidence pointing to specific experiences during college that can contribute to students' spiritual growth. The need for spiritual development in college is apparent. Two-thirds of the students in the study express a strong interest in spiritual matters, well over half report that their professors never encourage discussions of religious or spiritual matters, and about the same proportion report that professors never provide opportunities to discuss the purpose and meaning of life. Cultivating the Spirit aims to raise the awareness of academic administrators, faculty, and the public at large to the vital role that spirituality plays in student learning and development. Throughout the book, the authors identify strategies for enhancing students' development and encourage the academy to give greater priority to the spiritual aspects of students' educational and personal development.

"It's widely acknowledged that American parents from different class backgrounds take different approaches to raising their children. Upper and middle-class parents invest considerable time facilitating their children's activities, while working class and poor families take a more hands-off approach. These different strategies influence how children approach school. But missing from the discussion is the fact that millions of parents on both sides of the class divide are raising their children to listen to God. What impact does a religious upbringing have on their academic trajectories? Drawing on 10 years of survey data with over 3,000 teenagers and over 200 interviews, God, Grades, and Graduation (GGG) offers a revealing and at times surprising account of how teenagers' religious upbringing influences their educational pathways from high school to college. GGG introduces readers to a childrearing logic that cuts across social class groups and accounts for Americans' deep relationship with God: religious restraint. Current research (Chickering, Dalton, & Stamm, 2006, Jacobson & Jacobson, 2012, and Parks, 2000) supports the need for and an expectation of college students to develop more than just academic, professional, and/or vocational training while enrolled at institutions of higher education. This study examined the connection between college students, spirituality, and life change events. The research study involved a quantitative examination of the relationship between spirituality and life changing events of first-year college students. Specifically, the study evaluated whether life change events (e.g., financial difficulties, medical issues, family conflicts) correlated with undergraduate college students' spirituality levels. Three research questions and a hypothesis were included in this study. The hypothesis was based on the foundation that by researching whether or not there is a relationship between spirituality and life change events, college personnel can optimize the life change event experiences which can foster spiritual growth (Parks, 2000). Significance was found within the calculations performed to investigate what extent demographic factors correlate with a student's level of spirituality. It appears that a student's religious affiliation has a strong correlation with spirituality level. While significance was found within one of the three research questions for this study, the hypothesis was not supported. Even without significant findings, the research conducted for this study supports institutions of higher education seeking to provide opportunities for the spiritual development of college students by adding to the knowledge base regarding these correlations.
