Rapid globalization has led to increased flows of capital, services, ideas, information, and people between countries. As such, problems and challenges that face one nation often have a rippling impact throughout the region and globally. The growing list of cross-border issues cannot be resolved by isolated policy action at the national or subnational levels. It is essential to forge strategic alliances at the regional level that support the development of consolidated approaches for dialogue and action. This book discusses regional governance mechanisms and institutional arrangements to respond to emerging cross-border issues and trends in Asia and the Pacific, such as the movement of people including refugees and illegal migrants, regional trade integration for human development, effective and efficient water management, human trafficking, and health issues focusing on infectious disease surveillance and response. While examining the impact of governance on these issues, the book considers these questions: What are the key cross-border governance issues in Asia? One of the major knowledge challenges in the domain of Resilient and Sustainable Food Systems refers to the integration of perspectives on consumption, patterns that support public health, inclusive value chains, and environmentally sustainable food production. While there is a long record of the analysis of separate interventions, this special issue generates integrated insights, provides cross-cutting perspectives, and outlines practical and policy solutions that address these global challenges.
The collection of papers promotes the view that sustainable food systems require thorough insights into the structure and dynamics of agri-food production systems, the drivers for integrating food value chains and markets, and key incentives for supporting healthier consumer choices. On the production side, potential linkages between agricultural commercialization and intensification and their effects for food security and nutritional outcomes are analyzed. Value Chains are assessed for their contribution to improving exchange networks and markets for food products that simultaneously support efficiency, circularity, and responsiveness. This book is open access under a CC BY-NC-ND license. This volume analyzes the economic, social, and political challenges that emerging states confront today. Notwithstanding the growing importance of the ‘emerging states’ in global affairs and governance, many problems requiring immediate solutions have emerged at home largely as a consequence of the rapid economic development and associated sociopolitical changes. The middle-income trap is a major economic challenge faced by emerging states. This volume regards interest coordination for technological upgrading as crucial to avoid the trap and examines how various emerging states are grappling with this challenge by fostering public-private cooperation, voluntary associations of market players, and/or social networks. Social disparity is another serious problem. It is deeply rooted in history in the emerging states such as South Africa and many Latin American countries. However, income distribution is recently deteriorating even in East Asia that was once praised for its high economic growth with equity. Increasing pressure for political opening is another challenge for emerging states. This volume argues that the economic, social, and political problems are interwoven in the sense that the emerging states need to build political consensus in order to tackle the economic and social difficulties. Democratic institutions have not always been successful in this respect.

"The document "Indicators for the sustainable development of finfish Mediterranean aquaculture: highlights from the InDAM Project" reports the activities carried out during the first year of the InDAM Project "Indicators for Sustainable Development of Aquaculture and Guidelines for their use in the Mediterranean", in support to the GFCM CAQ Working Group on Sustainability in Aquaculture (WGSA). The project focuses on the practical use of the indicators for sustainable aquaculture and their adaptation to the Mediterranean Region. The methodology applied for the identification of the preliminary list of indicators was based on the PCI (Principles, Criteria and Indicators) approach and took into consideration the main outcomes and achievements of the recent projects carried out in the Mediterranean on the identification of indicators for sustainable aquaculture. The document also reports the results of the workshop on the "Selection of indicators for the sustainable development of aquaculture in the Mediterranean Sea" (27-28 November 2008, Montpellier, France), the expert meeting on "Indicators for the sustainable development of aquaculture in the Mediterranean Sea" (24-26 February 2009, Montpellier, France) and the workshop on "Guidelines and application of indicators for sustainable development of aquaculture" (19-20 November 2009, Salammbô, Tunisia), with recommendations given by the WGSA. The two pilot studies on the selection and evaluation of the indicators for aquaculture sustainable development carried out in Mugla, Turkey, and Monastir, Tunisia, are described.
