Excerpt from Sixteenth Annual Report of the Bureau of Labor and Industrial Statistics for the State of Virginia, 1913 It is gratifying to note the industries of 'virginia still on the increase. The industries tabulated comprise practically all of the manufacturing plants - the chief employers of labor. The product value was exceeding that of the year previous The increases over the former year appear chiefly in cigars, ' cigarettes and cheroots, coal and coke, iron and machine works, paper and pulp mills and tanneries; while the substantial decreases appear in boots and shoes, fish oil and fish guano, saw mills and tobacco manufacturers - see table on page following. The decrease in the tobacco output came from the removal of some of the larger plants to other States by reason of corporate reorganization; that in saw mills from the supply of standing timber having been depleted. The inspection work has been largely increased by reason of amended laws-see article on Inspection, page 111.
