Implicit surfaces are a powerful shape primitive for computer graphics. This book focuses on a shape modelling approach which generates synthetic shapes by the specification of an implicit surface generating function that has random properties. This type of graphic object can be called a stochastic implicit surface because the surface is perceived as the realisation of a stochastic process. The contributions of this book are in the form of new and improved modelling and rendering algorithms to deal with stochastic implicit surfaces. On the modelling side, a topological correction algorithm is described to detect disconnected surface parts that arise as a consequence of the implicit surface representation. A surface deformation algorithm, based on advection through a vector field, is also presented. On the rendering side, an improved ray casting method is presented that guarantees correct intersections between view rays and the surface, followed by a progressive refinement algorithm that provides an interactive rendering environment where the image quality steadily improves. An application is given in the context of the procedural modelling of a fractal planet.

Recent advances in the field of neural implicit surface representation has led to the use of signed distance functions as a continuous representation of complex surfaces. Though signed distance functions allow for a very simple and concise mapping of the environment, rendering these surfaces from signed distance functions are non-trivial and require iterative methods such as ray marching, leading to high render times. The inclusion of direction in these functions have been proposed and applied to various object-level applications, but have yet to be proposed for scene-level applications. This thesis explores the idea of scene-level directional distance functions and some of the problems that it faces. It then proposes three different methods through which the directional distance function can be implemented and potential solutions to some of the drawbacks of the directional distance function.

Implicit surfaces offer many advantages for sketch- based modeling systems, such as blending, CSG, and a procedural object hierarchy. Free-form deformation (FFD) is also extremely useful in this context, however existing FFD approaches do not support implicit surface representations, and FFD lattice manipulation is time-consuming compared to sketch- based techniques. In this thesis, an FFD technique suitable for implicit surface representations is described. To enhance real-time feedback, the problem is split into an approximate formulation used during interactive deformation, and a more robust variational technique which preserves desirable scalar field properties. As an interface to manipulate the deformation, a sketch-based volumetric peeling interface is introduced. The user's task is to draw a curve on the surface, and pull or push the surface to the desirable position via the curve. Subsequently, the deformation is automatically defined. This technique has been implemented in a prototype implicit FFD system called Taco. Results created in Taco show that a desirable deformation can be easily achieved while preserving implicit properties.
