Excerpt from The Phytologist, 1844, Vol. 1: A Popular Botanical Miscellany It has been a source of great pleasure to me to observe, from time to time, among such contributors, the honoured names of Forster, Woods, Botter, Wilson, Boott, Taylor, Greville and Ralfs, names familiar as household words to the ear of every botanist, names that constantly occur in works treating of British plants. Neither must I omit to enumerate others, perhaps of a younger school, but already honorably known as Mr. Spruce, the talented muscologist, Mr. Babington, Mr. Leighton, Dr. Balfour, Mr. Watson, Mr. Irvine, and Mr. Luxford, - all highly esteemed for their labours in the cause of British Botany, have lent their aid to The Phytologist.' TO the last-named gentleman I am indebted, not only for those papers which hear his name, but also for numerous anonymous articles, and the editorial management of the entire volume. And here I will take occasion to remark, that although The Phytologist 18 published at my cost, and under my immediate control; and although I am in every respect responsible for anonymous articles; yet I have no claim whatever to the merit of such articles, since they have generally ema nated from the pen of Mr. Luxford, whose name now stands in the title-page as the avowed editor. The Phytologist' has now become, what I have always wished it to be, the medium through which all our British botanists communicate with the public. It is true a few papers on British Botany still find their way into print through other channels, but when this is the case I consider it an imperative duty to notice them in these pages, giving an abstract of anything that I esteem worthy of preservation, and thus I endeavour to make the Phytologist' a complete register of the Botany of Britain. The subject of British Botany is comparatively so limited, that a single periodical, of moderate size, trifling cost, and very humble appearance and pretensions, is quite sufficient to embrace the whole, and while I hope never uncourteously to reject contributions on foreign Botany, I wish my contributors to understand, that my desire is to give a decided preference to that of our own country. Excerpt from The Phytologist, Vol. 4: A Popular Botanical Miscellany The second edition of Mr. Ward's work, like the first, goes into various subjects not strictly within the compass of its title, and cer tainly not within the province of the Phytologist' to criticise. Such, for instance, are the chapters intituled respectively On the applica tion Of the closed plan in improving the condition of the poor and On the probable future application Of the preceding facts. On these subjects we are glad to be excused from the expression of an opinion. It is far different, however, with what maybe termed the practical part of the work, and especially with the chapter On the conveyance Of plants on ship-board. Here Mr. Ward is an experienced guide, dealing with facts alone and the results, as recorded in the Appen dix, speak for themselves. In conclusion, we have to notice with cordial approbation the neat manner in which the work has been brought out, and the extreme beauty of the illustrations, which have been supplied by Mr. E. W.
