Book Description
FOREWORD The twelve chapters in this volume, delivered as lectures before public audiences in Dublin, make no pretence to form a full course of Irish history for any period. Their purpose is to correct and supplement. For the standpoint taken, no apology is necessary. Neither apathy nor antipathy can ever bring out the truth of history. I have been guilty of some inconsistency in my spelling of early Irish names, writing sometimes earlier, sometimes later forms. In the Index, I have endeavoured to remedy this defect. Since these chapters presume the reader's acquaintance with some general presentation of Irish history, they may be read, for the pre-Christian period, with Keating's account, for the Christian period, with any handbook of Irish history in print. EOIN MACNEILL.

Book Description
Excerpt from The Student's: Manual of Irish History It is generally admitted by all, except those who are specially interested in the denial, that the Land question and the Church question are the two great subjects which lie at the bottom of the Irish difficulty. The difficulties of the land question com menced in the reign of Henry II. The difficulties of the Church question commenced in the reign of Henry VIII. I shall re quest your attention briefly to the standpoints in Irish history from which we may take a clear view of these subjects. I shall commence with the land question, because I believe it to be the more important of the two, and because I hope to show that the Church question is intimately connected with it. Book Description
Excerpt from The Legacy of Past Years: A Study of Irish History MY endeavour in the following pages is to delineate the 1ncidents in Irish history which, if studied in an impartial, candid, and critical Spirit, give, as it seems to me, an answer to the perennial question, Why is it that the Realm is no richer for Ireland? My object is that, as the average Englishman and Irishman cannot study for themselves the history of the relations between England, or Great Britain, and Ireland, extending as it does over a period of some 700 years, a short sketch of events taken in relation with the circumstances existing at the time may help to dispel passion and prejudice, and may enable those who desire it to see both sides of the question and to form a sound judgment upon it.
