Caring has been identified as an important quality in nursing that needs to be recognized and nurtured within its framework. The problem under study was how senior-level baccalaureate nursing students perceived the level of caring by their faculty. Nurse educators are in a situation where modeling, dialogue, and practice are a confirmation of caring and influence for nursing students. If it is assumed that caring is a significant part of nursing, then finding the elements of caring within the teaching process as well as in the curriculum content are important. The conceptual framework utilized in this study was Watson's theory of human care. The Organizational Climate for Caring Questionnaire was given to 102 senior-level nursing students at Boise State University and Idaho State University. The sub-scores of the questionnaire were calculated, and means, standard deviations, and minimum and maximum scores reported. Means for the subscales are as follows: modeling (4.16), dialogue (3.86), practice (4.29), and confirmation/affirmation (4.09). These means reflected that the students only slightly agreed that they felt their faculty were caring. This is a concern. Reliability for the subscales was reported using Cronbach's alpha: modeling (0.94), dialogue (0.91), practice (0.86), and confirmation/affirmation (0.92). Future areas of research include how faculty perceive their behavior as caring and whether faculty can learn caring techniques that will enhance student learning. Caring also needs to be incorporated into the nursing curriculum early in education and supported throughout.

Caring is a term that is difficult to define, yet is synonymous with the profession of nursing. Caring can be understood from two major dimensions, or domains, which are instrumental behaviors, comprised of technical and physical caring, and expressive behaviors, including the emotional and psychosocial elements of caring. Clinical education plays an important role in teaching nursing students care ethics throughout the curriculum. Preceptorships refer to a clinical component of nursing education where students are involved in a mentoring relationship with a professional nurse, in which the professional nurse relates information and knowledge to the student to prepare them for their future career. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine how time spent in a preceptorship experience changed the senior-level nursing students perception of caring. In addition, different types of clinical units and preceptors were explored as a means to changing caring perceptions of the students. The sample included final semester, senior-level nursing students (n=31). Caring perceptions were measured using the Caring Dimensions Inventory (CDI-25). The results of the statistical analysis (Spearman's Correlation Coefficient, t-test, and descriptive statistics) found a significant relationship between the years of experience of the nurse preceptors and students' perception of care, but no significant difference in caring perceptions after the preceptorship experience. Descriptive statistical analysis revealed higher CDI-25 scores for students in certain clinical units and for those with a nurse preceptor identified as a facilitator. The results of the study demonstrated that nursing preceptorships can play an integral role in providing caring ethics education within the nursing curriculum.

The purpose of this descriptive study was to examine students' perceived confidence to provide culturally competent care. The literature showed a lack of empirical studies investigating the confidence of nurses and nursing students in providing culturally competent care. Therefore, the research question was, "What are Southwest Missouri senior baccalaureate student nurses' self-perceptions of their competence in providing cultural care for diverse ethnic clients?" A convenience sample of baccalaureate nursing students, enrolled during the fall 2009 semester, from two universities in Southwestern Missouri were recruited for this study. Students completed the Bernal and Froman's Cultural Self-efficacy Scale (CSES). This study found that the participants' self-perceived cultural knowledge, concepts, patterns, and transcultural nursing skills ranged between 3 (neutral) and 4 (moderate confidence) on the Likert scale 1 to 5. Based on the computed subscales of the CSES, the score of the total self-efficacy was 194.53, which means the participants rated themselves as neutral to moderately competent. The study found that there is a minimal increase in the self-perceived confidence levels of cultural competence compared to other studies in the Midwest.
