Book Description
The confirmed case of "mad cow" disease (BSE) in June 2005 illustrates the economic impact of disease outbreaks, as additional countries closed their markets to U.S. beef and beef products. Emerging diseases also threaten public health-11 out of 12 of the major global disease outbreaks over the last decade were from zoonotic agents (that spread from animals to humans). Animal Health at the Crossroads: Preventing, Detecting, and Diagnosing Animal Diseases finds that, in general, the U.S. animal health framework has been slow to take advantage of state-of-the-art technologies being used now to protect public health; better diagnostic tests for identifying all animal diseases should be made a priority. The report also recommends that the nation establish a high-level, authoritative, and accountable coordinating mechanism to engage and enhance partnerships among local, state, and federal agencies, and the private sector.

Book Description
- A hypothesis is a proposition, set forth as an explanation for the occurrence of a phenomenon, that can be tested. - The basis for scientific investigation is the collection of information to formulate and test hypotheses. - Experimental methods measure the effect of manipulations caused by the investigator; observational methods collect information about naturally occurring events. - There are three sub-types of experimental techniques that differ in the way subjects are chosen for inclusion in the study, in the amount of control that the investigator has over variables, and in the method used to assess changes in other variables. - Descriptive observational studies dominate the early phase of most investigations and involve the description of disease-related events in the population. Associations among factors may be observed but the strength of the associations is not measured. - Analytical observation al techniques are of three basic types: prevalence surveys, case:control studies, and incidence or cohort studies. All attempt to explain the nature of relationships among various factors and to measure the strength of associations. - Prevalence surveys and case:control studies deal with disease existing at the time of the study; incidence studies are concerned with the development of disease over time. - Observational studies may be retrospective, using existing data, or prospective with collection of new information.

Book Description
Excerpt from Information in Relation to Disease Prevailing Among Swine and Other Domestic Animals So general and fatal have many of these maladies grown that stock breeding and rearing has, to some extent, become a precarious calling instead of the profitable business of former years. This would seem to be especially true as it relates to swine. Year by year new diseases, heretofore unknown in our country, make their appearance among this class of farm animals, while older ones become permanently localized and much more fatal in their results. Farmers, as a general thing, are neglectful of their stock, and pay but little attention to sporadic cases of sickness among their flocks and herds. It is only when diseases become general, and consequently of an epidemic and contagious character, that active measures are taken for the relief of the animals afflicted. It is then generally too late, as remedies have ceased to have their usual beneficial effects, and the disease is only stayed when it has no more victims to prey upon. This interest is too great to be longer neglected by the general government. Not only the health of its citizens, but one of the greatest sources of our wealth, demands that it should furnish the means for a most searching and thorough investigation into the causes of all diseases affecting live stock. While a large number of the diseases to which farm-animals are subject are familiar to skilled veterinary surgeons, it should be borne in mind that but few sections of the country are blessed with professors in this science, as reference to the letters herewith transmitted will abundantly show. In most cases the stock-breeder himself assumes the important functions and responsibilities of the surgeon, and without the least knowledge of veterinary science he proceeds to diagnose the disease and dose the animal with a drug of which he is ignorant, or of the effects of which he is unable to judge until the animal has )assed beyond the hope of recovery. Where such is the practice it is not strange that nine cases out of ten prove fatal. It may be urged that works on veterinary surgery describe most of the diseases to which farm-animals are subject, and point out the best-known remedies for the same. Admit this, and yet the desired relief is not afforded thereby. These works are expensive and but few farmers can afford to purchase them; a still less number possess the qualifications necessary to comprehend them. What would then seem the wisest policy is that which may result from an investigation of the character proposed, and the results disseminated gratuitously through means of cheap annual reports from this department. By such means farmers and stock-breeders would soon become familiar with the general symptoms of the more prevalent diseases, and also be enabled to apply intelligently such remedies as science has or may point out. Some very interesting investigations in this matter have been commenced, and are now being prosecuted with such vigor as is possible with the very insufficient appropriation that can be devoted to the purpose. The correspondence herewith transmitted contains information which, if heeded by the farmers and stock-growers of the country, will result in a better sanitary condition, and a consequent diminution of disease among all classes of domesticated animals.
