Book Description
This book is the outcome of the research project “Internationalization Patterns of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises Operating in High-Tech Industries”, funded by the National Science Centre (NCN) of Poland. It presents updated knowledge on the internationalization patterns of high-tech firms, with particular insights into their main characteristics such as innovations and research and development. The theoretical framework of the book is built on a literature review and the survey of existing research. In turn, the results of the research project which gave rise to the book are presented, highlighting the internationalization path of firms operating in the high-tech and medium-high-tech sectors.

Book Description
There is now a certain tradition of Anglo-German comparative research on new technology-based firms (NTBFs). Two of the most influential studies in this area have both been sponsored by the Anglo-German Foundation for the Study of In dustrial Society (AGF). Starting in 1977, the first AGF project on NTBFs, which was carried out by the consultancy firm Arthur D. Little, has been one ofthe most important early contributions in this field (Little 1977). This report was the first public document to use the term 'new technology-based firm' and to provide a definition, which despite its operational limitations subsequently became an es tablished term in the literature. More importantly, this study represented one ofthe first serious attempts to survey the existing stock of this type of firm. The report was critical of the contemporary situation in Europe. (This is a policy area which continues to be hotly debated, see European Commission 1995, Bank of England 1996 and HM Treasury 1998. ) It emphasised that, in comparison with the USA, Germany and the UK were each lagging behind if judged by the rate of formation of NTBFs and in their total contribution to the overall economic activity of both countries. In terms of a policy contribution, this study was instrumental in high lighting the lack ofsupport infrastructures for the genesis and growth of high-tech start-ups in two of Europe's leading economies.

Book Description
This study explores the process of de-internationalisation in small high-technology firms. The key research questions are how and why these firms deinternationalise. Being positioned at the intersection of entrepreneurship and international business research paths, the study expressly investigates whether de-internationalisation could be viewed as (i) an entrepreneurial activity; and/or (ii) an integral part of a small high-technology firms' growth process. Driven by the nature of the research questions, a multiple-case study methodology was adopted for the purpose of theory building. Five firms were selected and located on the basis of theoretical and snow-ball sampling strategies. To explore companies' critical events and episodes, the method of critical incident technique was employed. In total, 24 semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with company directors and their stakeholders, yielding approximately 150 pages of interview data. Data pertinent to each case was coded in an iterative manner, working back and forth between theory, emerging patterns and data. Within- and cross-case analyses were employed to analyse the data. The method of constructing typologies by reduction was employed extensively to advance middle-range theories. The study contributes to (i) international business research by developing a process model of de-internationalisation and defining its constructs; (ii) entrepreneurship research by redefining the entrepreneurial orientation construct and developing a set of propositions to test the proposed definition; and (iii) international entrepreneurship research by providing a unifying definition of born globals, and delineating the research domain of international entrepreneurship research. Apart from developing these middle-range theories, the study also puts forward a formal theory of new venture survivability that postulates that the closer the new business venture is to the hype, the higher the likelihood of failure. Future research is warranted to either confirm or refute the proposed middle-range and formal theories. Implications for practitioners and policy makers are also discussed.

Book Description
This thesis examines the internationalisation of small firms in high technology sectors based in England and Scotland. The conceptual stance taken is that internationalisation is part of the growth and development process of small firms and needs to be viewed holistically. Internationalisation processes are examined chronologically by tracking the external links made by the sample firms from their inception until the date of the survey. The theoretical approach is eclectic, drawing on internalisation/transaction cost, network, internationalisation and resource-based approaches to explanation of firm growth and specifically, their international development. The constructs of the research, the external links, are constructed on the dimensions of internal and external links, inward and outward links and are differentiated by strategic value chain activities research and development, production, and marketing/distribution. The findings of the research indicate that most small technology based firms do not internationalise in an export-based evolutionary pattern. Rather, intemationalisation processes are diverse and complex, often reflecting areas of specialisation of the firm, or its internal growth processes. The research indicated that internationalisation is accelerating for the small firm sector, at least in high technologies, with first international links occurring immediately or soon after inception. The factors influencing internationalisation tend to be firm specific and associated with the capabilities, competencies and resources of the associated firms. The major contribution of this thesis is in its development of a conceptual approach which allows the heterogeneity of small firms to be taken into account in the research design, focuses on the holistic growth and development of the firm rather than a functional perspective, and makes a significant advance towards the integration of different theoretical approaches to the development of small international firms. There are important implications in the findings, amongst which is evidence that small firms in certain sectors are subject to influences from international, if not global, industries at an early stage. These firms need to be prepared to compete at international level, and become involved in cross border activity at very eariy stages in their development. At policy level, the imperative is to provide appropriate infrastructural support and advice which goes beyond the encouragement of exports and recognises that small firms may be involved in additional or alternative internationalisation processes than to the conventional export route broadly recognised within the policy framework.
