Excerpt from Moliere's Les Précieuses Ridicules: Edited With Introduction, Notes, and Vocabulary Scudery's description of the earte tle Tena're, Voltaire's Som mat're, and Moliere's Preface. Within these limits the list of words and idiomatic phrases is believed to be complete, and many verbal difficulties are there explained which would otherwise have found a place among the notes. The bibliog raphy has been prepared for the convenience of those who may be induced by the reading of this play to continue their study of Moliere and of the century in which he lived. It should be added that in the notes and introductory mat ter a conscientious effort has everywhere been made to arouse the interest of the student, and to enable him to enter into the Spirit of the play by first entering into the spirit of the times, a process which is nowhere more necessary than in Les Préez'euses ridicules. But after all, for the best com mentary on this delicious little thing, as Addison might have called it, we must still go to the House of Moliere, and listen to the inimitable actors whose privilege it is to receive and to hand down unimpaired the glorious traditions of the French stage. In conclusion, there remains the pleasant duty of express ing obligation to all those who have helped to see this volume through the press, and especially to Prof. A. N. Van Daell of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Mr. D. O. S.
