Book Description
Excerpt from Modern Dentistry Dentistry up to the last ten years made little or no advance along the lines of Health Conservation. For two thousand years dentistry has been devising collectors of filth and spreaders of general disease. The Roman, who strapped loose necrotic teeth to firm teeth with gold bands, defied the laws of health and cleanliness no more than many of our bridge workers of the present day. The dentist of the seventh century, in putting in gold fillings, to all intents and purposes used the same method as that of the soft-gold worker of the twentieth century. Dentistry, owing to the teachings of Pasteur, has at last awakened to its great responsibility. Henceforth no appliance, however beautiful externally, will be tolerated unless it can be kept absolutely clean, and no repair of a tooth or root will be countenanced unless it conforms to the standards of scientific mouth hygiene. Fillings, crowns, and bridges are no longer to be considered mere objects of art for personal adornment or mechanical trituration of food, they must primarily be hygienic. Through the elimination of mouth infection, and of much con sequent systemic disease, dentistry must take a place in the fore most ranks of preventive medicine. Dentists henceforth must be trained along medical lines, and any contention that has existed in the past between the physician and dentist must disappear in a common endeavor to free the community at large from the deadly effects of mouth infection. For this disease is now recognized as an almost universal one that every year kills its victims directly or indirectly by the hundreds of thousands, and it is the author's hope that this book will be of some service in its cure and prevention. Book Description
Excerpt from A d104-Book of Dental Pathology and Therapeutics, Including Pharmacology: Being a Treatise on the Principles and Practice of Dental Medicine; For Students and Practitioners The immense development of modern dentistry has brought with it a more rational and convenient grouping of its subjects. The American text-books of Operative and Prosthetic Dentistry have already won acceptance, each in its own field. They leave untouched a range of subjects which are naturally cognate, and hence are most advantageously taught in conjunction - namely, Dental Pathology, Therapeutics, and Pharmacology. The fitness of this grouping is manifest. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
The Archives of Dentistry was initially established as a consolidation between the Missouri Dental Journal and the New England Journal of Dentistry. Concerned about maintaining a reputation for relevancy, the publication operated under the modern practice of never re-publishing material that had previously been published elsewhere. As a result, the submissions in the Archives of Dentistry are fresh, interesting, and often provide incredibly unique insight into the lives of dentists and their professional practice at the turn of the nineteenth century. With several editors and dozens of original contributors, this volume contains submission on a variety of topics, including "the Hippocratic Oath," temperament in relation to teeth, crowded dentures, history of dentistry, modern practice, notable dental professionals, legal issues in practice, and ethical concerns. The amount of information and references available for the enthusiast is truly staggering. In addition, several tangential articles are included in this volume that may have seemed urgently relevant to the dentists of the past, but tickle the fancy of today's reader: the effect of tobacco on boys, the explosion of a tooth, and an antidote to arsenic. The submissions range in tone, quality, and useful information, but each provides an immeasurable level of entertainment. Archives of Dentistry is a fascinating read for individuals interested in dentistry, the historic practice of dentistry, ethical issues in healthcare, and notable dental professionals. A wide range of essays and articles offers the discriminating reader many topics to preview, from the mundane to the absurd. Comical at times, but always about dentistry, this publication is simultaneously entertaining and informative. Book Description
Excerpt from First Aid Dentistry This book has been designed for medical and dental practitioners and students, for nurses; and especially for hospital corps men of the military and naval service and for all who are called upon to administer relief from dental pain, where the services of a dental surgeon cannot be obtained. The impulse prompting this book was not to multiply books, but arose from the writer's belief and that expressed by many practitioners, both medical and dental, that this hand-book is needed by those it is intended to serve. The extent and scope of the methods described are limited to First Aid, which will relieve the patient from suffering until a dental surgeon may complete the treatment. A minimum number of instruments is recommended and their use shown and described. The methods used are simple and the descriptions have been written in the simplest words, technical terms being eliminated as much as possible; all methods used can be accomplished on board ship or in the field or in any hospital or medical office. Due credit is given the works of modern writers, which have been consulted and without them it would have been impossible to accomplish what has been done. The gratitude of the writer is here expressed to Captain J. R. Harris, M. C., U. S. Army, for valuable suggestions and assistance; and special credit is due Mr. H. A. Utter for photos from which these illustrations were made. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
