John H. McFadden and His Age
Author: Richard Carreño
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781680980394
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 304
Book Description
"John H. McFadden and His Age: Cotton and Culture in Philadelphia is the first biography dedicated to John McFadden (1850-1921), Philadelphia's-if not the country's-grandest cotton king of his time and collector and donor of an important grouping of British paintings now in the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Tracing his life in both England and Philadelphia, this book not only examines how McFadden accumulated his wealth and art collection, but also illuminates his roles as a notable philanthropist, a rare-book collector, a real-estate developer, and a museum administrator, as well as the founder of possibly the world's first multimedia news café. Situating him within the context of Philadelphia's late-nineteenth and early-twentieth-century major players, McFadden is revealed as the city's unofficial arts czar, overseeing-and often ruling- many of its foremost cultural institutions"--

A Thousand of Ours
Author: Grace Sublett
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781535173773
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 396
Book Description
I felt compelled to provide a second edition of "A Thousand of Ours" for many reasons. First, we now have more than twenty-three hundred members, and growing, in the family tree of John H. and Florence Gray McFadden. That's an amazing number when you think about it all starting with one man and one woman falling in love in the 1860's. Most of our family tree members will not have access to the original Grace McFadden Sublett book, "A Thousand of Ours" since only two hundred fifty copies were printed in 1968. Current and future generations of McFaddens will now have access to the one hundred fifty years of our rich family heritage. Second, we McFaddens have strong roots. We are loyal, hardworking (to a fault), responsible, patriotic and political. We love our families and our God. Many of us enjoy music, we all love to laugh, some put their thoughts in books and poems, most attend church, and almost none of us like to be alone. Sound familiar-then you must be a McFadden! The stories told in "A Thousand of Ours" and the "Spreading Tree" help us to see how we have become who we are. Third, but most importantly, my Granny Grace spent many years of her life working on the McFadden Family record. She truly wanted the McFadden lineage and the McFadden stories to continue to be captured and shared. She would be so proud to know that, in her words, "Someone, someday, would use it to tell who we were, to give a story of our roots, our growth and our heritage as McFaddens." Grace Sublett's Granddaughter Charlotte Sublett Thompson 2017
