Book Description
When researching, teaching or working with information systems in the public sector, one is left with few or often no textbooks that provide useful case studies or surveys on the implementation and effects of integrating information technologies in the organizations' operations. This is surprising since in most first world countries the public sector consumes a substantial part of the gross national product. Even more astonishing is the vast amount of financial and organizational resources that are spent developing and implementing various information systems. We decided to write this book to provide information for those studying information systems at business schools, information and computer departments at collegesl universities, and for those working hands-on with EDI and data networking in public administration. Thus, our primary target groups for this book are professionals, training (MA-courses), computer science, MBA, MP A, and political science. EDI has been seen as a means to wire the various policy areas in the public sector. Those included are not limited strictly to the public organizations, but extend to their trade partners. Also, government has sought ways to stimulate the usage of ED I in the private sector beyond those transactions involving direct communication with the public sector. In this book, we have contributors from eight countries and a total of 14 chapters reporting on issues of importance when developing and implementing EDI, when government wants to stimulate the diffusion of EDI in society, and when organizations want to address the impact of their investments in ED!.

Book Description
Recent years have seen an increasing number of research contributions recognizing the importance of human and social aspects in information systems development. However, a lack of knowledge and expertise for dealing with them adequately still exists and this neglect continues to be one of the principal causes of information systems failure. This volume aims to help redress the balance and to place information systems and information systems development into the larger organizational and political context. Contributions have been sourced not only from information system specialists, but also from those involved in reference disciplines including management, sociology, pyschology, computer science, anthropology and philosophy. It is hoped this diversity of input consolidates the book's scope and will stimulate further practical advancements in this field in the future.

Book Description
In this book Eileen Trauth peers inside the day-to-day work lives of the people who have been bringing about Ireland's transition from a small agricultural country to a healthy information economy. It is one of few book-length interpretive studies in the information systems field. This book links the disciplines of information systems, international management, economic development, history, and public policy to tell the story behind the statistics about Ireland's economic development. The findings from this ten-year study illustrate the range of socio-cultural factors, which influence the emergence of an information sector. Ireland's story contains a message for other nations that this change to a new way of working and living is intimately connected to the cultural context within which it occurs. This book reveals the ethnographic approach that was used by taking the reader through the interpretive process as it occurred. The Appendix is devoted to additional detail about the methodology. Audience: This book should be read by PhD students and others who want to learn more about the actual application of ethnographic methods in information systems research. It should be read by students, researchers, teachers, and policy-makers working in several fields including global information systems, the information society, management in the knowledge economy, and economic development.
