The problems of urban traffic in the industrially developed countries have been at the top of the priority list for a long time. While making a critical contribution to the economic well being of those countries, transportation systems in general and highway traffic in particular, also have detrimental effects which are evident in excessive congestion, high rates of accidents and severe pollution problems. Scientists from different disciplines have played an important role in the development and refinement of the tools needed for the planning, analysis, and control of urban traffic networks. In the past several years, there were particularly rapid advances in two areas that affect urban traffic: 1. Modeling of traffic flows in urban networks and the prediction of the resulting equilibrium conditions; 2. Technology for communication with the driver and the ability to guide him, by providing him with useful, relevant and updated information, to his desired destination.

This is a book about infrastructure networks that are intrinsically nonlinear. The networks considered range from vehicular networks to electric power networks to data networks. The main point of view taken is that of mathematical programming in concert with finite-dimensional variational inequality theory. The principle modeling perspectives are network optimization, the theory of Nash games, and mathematical programming with equilibrium constraints. Computational methods and novel mathematical formulations are emphasized. Among the numerical methods explored are network simplex, gradient projection, fixed-point, gap function, Lagrangian relaxation, Dantzig-Wolfe decomposition, simplicial decomposition, and computational intelligence algorithms. Many solved example problems are included that range from simple to quite challenging. Theoretical analyses of several models and algorithms, to uncover existence, uniqueness and convergence properties, are undertaken. The book is meant for use in advanced undergraduate as well as doctoral courses taught in civil engineering, industrial engineering, systems engineering, and operations research degree programs. At the same time, the book should be a useful resource for industrial and university researchers engaged in the mathematical modeling and numerical analyses of infrastructure networks.

This volume is a compendium of papers presented during the NATO Workshop which took place in Capri, Italy, October 12-18, 1986 on the general subject of "Flow Control of Congested Networks: The Case of Data Processing and Transportation", and of which we acted as co-chairmen. A wide range of books on urban systems models are available today for the student of urban planning, geography, and economics. There are few, if any, books, however, that deal with integrated urban systems modeling from the operational viewpoint. The term "integrated" is used here in the same sense as the "general equilibrium", in contrast to such approaches as "sequential" or "partial equilibrium". In fact, the main thesis of this book is that the characteristics of ur ban activity that best distinguish it from rural activity are (1) the intensive use of urban land and (2) urban congestion. On this basis, models that are introduced in this book are three- dimensional in character and produce urban land use configurations with explicit optimal density of urban pro duction activities along with optimal levels of transportation congestion. It is also assumed that both public and private sectors play significant roles in shaping urban forms, structures, and functions in mixed economic systems. From this viewpoint, models developed in this book address two integrated decision-making procedures: one by the public sector, which provides urban infrastructure and public services, and the other one by the private sector, which uses provided infrastructure and public services in pursuing parochial interests.
