The twentieth century has witnessed periodic revivals comparable to the awakenings of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. And yet, many of the places and players of these reawakenings have been overlooked or neglected by the chroniclers of North American church history. A Survey of 20th-Century Revival Movements in North America attempts to set the record straight. It offers a concise and useful survey of the major currents of revival that have swept over this continent since the turn of the century. As the final decade of this century approaches it is appropriate that historian Richard Riss chart the course of twentieth-century revival on this continent and record the people, places, and events that have shaped the modern American church. Names like William J. Seymour or Maria B. Woodworth-Etter; places like Azusa Street or North Battleford, Saskatchewan; and events like the forest Home Briefing Conference or the Latter Rain Revival might not be as familiar as Billy Graham, Oral Roberts, or the Jesus movement, but each has played a significant role in keeping the streams of revival flowing. The impact of these often lesser-known figures and events is tremendous. For example, William J. Seymour was a key figure in early Pentecostalism, which has become one of the most rapidly growing segments of modern Christianity. Excerpt from Times of Refreshing: A History of American Revivals From 1740-1877, With Their Philosophy and Methods In presenting this book on American Revivals the author is very conscious that he has not compassed his subject. He has written in the hope of helping the Church in her present revival work. He has therefore given much space to an account of present revival movements. Such an account must of necessity he rather of the nature of a sketch than of a history. The limits of this hook have forbidden any exhaustive consideration of the early history of revivals in this country. Indeed, it has hardly been necessary to the purpose in view, which has been to show the thread of common teaching and endeavor running through all these years. While methods have differed in different periods, the essential elements of Divine Truth and Divine Grace are the same at all times. Amid the whirl of the revival scenes of this day, it would be difficult, if not impossible, to write an abiding history of these times. That can better be done in the perspective of other days. That has not been attempted. The practical aim of furthering the gospel by giving a report of its triumphs has been steadily held in view. Dark as were the conditions which preceded the Great Awakening, there were not wanting rays of light to give promise of brighter days. Rev. Solomon Stoddard, whose practices evidently were better than his theories, had been blessed in his pastorate at Northampton, with special ingatherings which he called harvests, during the years 1679, 1683, 1696, 1712, and 1718. Revivals were also reported at Hartford, Conn., in 1696, at Taunton, Mass., in 1705, and at Windom, Conn., in 1721. The great earthquake of 1727 profoundly affected the public mind and led many to inquire seriously concerning the way of salvation. That same year Rev. Gilbert Tennent, who was destined to play no inconspicuous part in the Great Awakening, was called to the pastorate of a Presbyterian Church at New Brunswick, New Jersey. There he came in contact with the fruitful ministry of Rev. Theodore Frelinghuysen, who for seven years had been pastor of a Dutch Reformed Church in the vicinity, and whose success together with f his fraternal counsel incited the young minister to a spirit of inquiry concerning his own lack of fruitfulness in ministerial labors. A sickness which visited him about this time deepened these impressions to such an extent that he resolved to be more faithful and earnest in his ministry should he recover.
