This publication summarizes information on Arctic grayling in the Williston Reservoir watershed of British Columbia. It begins with a chronological outline of Arctic grayling research in the watershed including inventories, stream fertilization, habitat enhancement, stocking, life history & genetic studies, and radio tracking. It then provides a synthesis in outline form of Arctic grayling data from Williston watershed projects & from the published literature under the following headings: reproduction, early rearing, habitat utilization, migrations, food, age & growth, and genetics. This is followed by discussion of the potential factors that limit the Arctic grayling population in the Reservoir, such as food & habitat availability, predation, egg & fry mortalities, competition, and overfishing. Finally, recommendations are made to prevent further declines in the Arctic grayling population, enhance or restore production from existing populations, and determine if & how stocks can be reintroduced into historical habitats.

Arctic grayling were abundant in the upper Peace, Finlay, & Parsnip watersheds of British Columbia before construction of the Bennett Dam and flooding of the Williston Reservoir in 1968. Arctic grayling populations in the Reservoir started to decline in the 1980s and by 1988 most populations in the Reservoir & smaller streams flowing directly into the reservoir had severely declined or disappeared. This document presents a plan that intends to provide a co-ordinated approach to preserve & restore Arctic grayling populations and their habitat within the Williston watershed. The introduction reviews the biology of this species and the possible reasons for the decline in its population. Plan activities are then listed under four strategic objectives: understanding Arctic grayling biology; develop watershed-specific management strategies to conserve & restore native stocks; protect, restore, & manage Arctic grayling habitat; and inform & educate the public. A work plan & time lines are also included.
