Book Description
Integration of Science and Technology with Development: Caribbean and Latin American Problems in the Context of the United Nations Conference on Science and Technology for Development discusses the science and technology (S&T) problems in developing countries of the Western hemisphere. This book is organized into five part encompassing 20 chapters. The five parts deal with the issues arising from the basic propositions of the United Nations Conference on Science and Technology for Development (UNCSTD), such as the problems involving building up S&T capability, infrastructure and technology transfer, technological problems in the Caribbean. Other issues discussed include the science and technology policies in Latin America, and the UNCSTD symposium preparations. The book ends with a presentation of a brief debate on the topics of research on science and technology in Latin America and the Caribbean, and with a report of the Symposium.

Book Description
Watson, Crawford, and Farley examine the ways in which science and technology (S & T) support poverty alleviation and economic development and how these themes have been given emphasis or short shrift in various areas of the World Bank's work. Central to their thesis is the now well-established argument that development will increasingly depend on a country's ability to understand, interpret, select, adapt, use, transmit, diffuse, produce, and commercialize scientific and technological knowledge in ways appropriate to its culture, aspirations, and level of development. The authors go beyond this tenet, analyzing the importance of S & T for development within specific sectors. They present policy options for enhancing the effectiveness of S & T systems in developing countries, review previous experience of the World Bank and other donors in supporting S & T, and suggest changes that the World Bank and its partners can adopt to increase the impact of the work currently undertaken in S & T. The authors' main messages are: * S & T has always been important for development, but the unprecedented pace of advancement of scientific knowledge is rapidly creating new opportunities for and threats to development. * Most developing countries are largely unprepared to deal with the changes that S & T advancement will bring. * The World Bank's numerous actions in various domains of S & T could be more effective in producing the needed capacity improvements in client countries. * The World Bank could have a greater impact if it paid increased attention to S & T in education, health, rural development, private sector development, and the environment. The strategy emphasizes four S & T policy areas: education and human resources development, the private sector, the public sector, and information communications technologies. The paper--a joint product of the Education Team, Human Development Network, and the Environmentally and Socially Sustainable Development Vice Presidency--is part of a larger effort in the Bank to engage client countries in an active science and technology dialogue while increasing awareness of the centrality of these issues to the Bank's work.

Book Description
Various challenges prevent many emerging economies, including those within Latin America, from exploring the full potential of science, technology, and innovation. One major issue is the global need for a comprehensive understanding of science diplomacy and its role in bridging gaps in these crucial areas. Existing research often overlooks these regions' specific contexts and challenges, leading to a knowledge chasm. Developments and Approaches in Science Diplomacy: Latin America and the Caribbean addresses this lack of knowledge head-on, offering a detailed exploration of science diplomacy in Latin America and the Caribbean, and its implications for development. By focusing on real-world cases and practical insights, this book provides a roadmap for policymakers, diplomats, and researchers to harness the power of science diplomacy for sustainable development. Whether you're a researcher looking to deepen your understanding of science diplomacy or a policymaker seeking actionable strategies, this book offers a valuable resource. It highlights the importance of international engagement and collaboration in achieving development objectives, particularly in the context of the scientific diaspora and emerging economies. Through this lens, the book offers innovative solutions and strategies applied in Latin America and other regions facing similar challenges.

Book Description
The true story of an Alaska Native village destroyed by flooding and erosion caused by climate change—and how they fought for help. Warming Arctic temperatures have been making coastal areas of Alaska increasingly uninhabitable. In 2008, the small Alaska Native village of Kivalina filed a legal claim against some of the world’s largest fossil fuel companies for damaging their homeland and creating a false debate around climate change. Academic and former journalist Christine Shearer explores the history leading up to the lawsuit, its connections to disaster management and adaptation, and its relationship to past misinformation campaigns involving lead, asbestos, and tobacco. Kivalina’s struggle for safe relocation, the book argues, is part of our common struggle to acknowledge and address climate change before it is too late. 2012 Rachel Carson Environment Book Award (Honorable Mention) Praise for Kivalina “Moving, infuriating, ominous . . . . Shearer provides an impressively concise and comprehensive history of the growth of corporate power in America; its influence on, entwinement with, and corruption of government; [and] corporate obfuscation of industrial hazards.” —Publisher’s Weekly “Best book of 2011: one of the most timely and important books to be published in 2011—and in the past decade.” —Jeff Biggers, The Huffington Post “In novelistic detail, Shearer recounts the science, politics, legal battles, and human experience at one of the leading edges of climate change impact. In doing so, she . . . tells the story not just of one village in Alaska, but of us all.” —The Society of Environmental Journalists
