Comprising the Proceedings of the International Workshop on State-of-the-Art Hydraulic Engineering held in Bari, Italy on 16-19 February 2004, this volume presents an in-depth investigation of the energy loss of skimming flows under a range of discharges, step and dam heights, and channel slopes. Including a wealth of information, the volume is divided into the following key sections: air-water flows and transitional flows; stepped chute and transitional flows; environmental and coastal hydraulics with dispersion in estuaries and jets; and transitional flows. Fluvial, Environmental and Coastal Developments in Hydraulic Engineering constitutes a comprehensive and systematic analysis of topics, including certain findings and discussions which are virtually unprecedented in hydraulic literature. As such, the volume is undoubtedly an important one, and will prove to be of particular interest to scientists and students of hydraulics and fluid mechanics, engineers, and specialists in the field of environmental protection.

Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 527
Book Description
The second edition of Julien's textbook presents an analysis of rivers from mountain streams to river estuaries. The book is rooted in fundamental principles to promote sound engineering practice. State-of-the-art methods are presented to underline theory and engineering applications. River mechanics blends the dual concepts of water conveyance and sediment transport. Like the first edition, this textbook contains ample details on river equilibrium, river dynamics, bank stabilization, and river engineering. Complementary chapters also cover the physical and mathematical modeling of rivers. As well as being completely updated throughout, three new chapters have been added on watershed dynamics, hillslope stability, and stream restoration. Throughout the text, hundreds of examples, exercises, problems, and case studies assist the reader in learning the essential concepts of river engineering. The textbook is very well illustrated to enhance advanced student learning, while researchers and practitioners will find the book to be an invaluable reference.

River Flow 2020
Author: Wim S. J. Uijttewaal
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9780367627737
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 2422
Book Description
Rivers form one of the lifelines in our society by providing essential services such as availability of fresh water, navigation, energy, ecosystem services, and flood conveyance. Because of this essential role, mankind has interfered continuously in order to benefit most and at the same time avoid adverse consequences such as flood risk and droughts. This has resulted in often highly engineered rivers with a narrow set of functions. In the last decades rivers are increasingly considered in a more holistic manner as a system with a multitude of interdependent processes. River research and engineering has therefore added to the river fundamentals also themes like ecohydraulics, consequences of climate change, and urbanisation. River Flow 2020 contains the contributions presented at the 10th conference on Fluvial Hydraulics, River Flow 2020, organised under the auspices of the Committee on Fluvial Hydraulics of the International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research (IAHR). What should have been a lively physical gathering of researchers, students and practitioners, was converted into an online event as the COVID-19 pandemic hindered international travelling and large gatherings of people. Nevertheless, the fluvial hydraulics community showed their interest and to be very much alive with a high number of participations for such event. Since its first edition in 2002, in Louvain-la-Neuve, this series of conferences has found a large and loyal audience in the river research and engineering community while being also attractive to the new researchers and young professionals. This is highlighted by the large number of contributions applying for the Coleman award for young researchers, and also by the number of applications and attendants to the Master Classes which are aimed at young researchers and students. River Flow 2020 aims to provide an updated overview of the ongoing research in this wide range of topics, and contains five major themes which are focus of research in the fluvial environment: river fundamentals, the digital river, the healthy river, extreme events and rivers under pressure. Other highlights of River Flow 2020 include the substantial number of interdisciplinary subthemes and sessions of special interest. The contributions will therefore be of interest to academics in hydraulics, hydrology and environmental engineering as well as practitioners that would like to be updated about the newest findings and hot themes in river research and engineering.

Fluvial Hydraulics
Author: S. L. Dingman
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0195172868
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 570
Book Description
"Bridging the gap between qualitative and quantitative descriptions of natural rivers, Fluvial Hydraulics provides a sound understanding of water and sediment flows in natural rivers. This understanding is essential for modeling and predicting hydrologic and geomorphologic processes, erosion, sediment transport, water supply and quality, habitat management, flood hazards, and river restoration. The book will be especially valuable in providing a firm scientific basis for the growing field of river restoration. It bridges the gap between the highly quantitative mechanics-based civil-engineering approach to stream hydraulics and the more qualitative treatments of fluvial geomorphology typical of earth sciences and natural resources curricula. Many concepts are illustrated using measurements of natural river flows." "The book is specifically designed for upper-level students and practitioners who want to gain a better understanding of river behavior. The bases of the equations that are used to describe and predict river flows are systematically presented, including dimensional analysis."--BOOK JACKET.
