Book Description
There are many facilities throughout the United States which depend on coal as a fuel. When handled properly, coal can be a very efficient and safe fuel. However, there are fire and explosion hazards associated with coal and these hazards are more accentuated as the particle size of the coal is reduced, such as occurs in a pulverized-fuel system. The first half of this report deals with the characteristics of coal and the circumstances surrounding its fire and explosion potential. There are basically three different types of pulverized-fuel systems utilized throughout the United States: direct-fired, semi-direct-fired, and indirect-fired. Typically, all three systems pulverize coal to a fineness of 85% or more passing a U.S. standard 200-mesh sieve (0.003-inch particle size); however, each system is designed differently for different purposes. The second half of this report describes and discusses each of these three systems, including the equipment involved and the path of the coal, air, and moisture.
