Les langues sifflées, liées à des biotopes particuliers, représentent un patrimoine oral peu étudié. Elles sont analysées ici dans leur diversité suite à un travail de terrain et à des collaborations dans une dizaine de communautés linguistiques du monde entier. La parole sifflée s'appuie sur des éléments phonétiques de la voix parlée d'origine pour communiquer à distance ou dans le bruit ambiant. Elle permet donc une intelligibilité élevée des phrases dans des conditions contraignantes d'écoute. La description typologique de ces langues développée à partir des enregistrements collectés a permis de faire émerger différentes stratégies de transposition de la voix en sifflements. Celles ci dépendent de la phonologie des langues concernées. Une étude comparée de la voix parlée, de la voix criée et de la parole sifflée a montré que le sifflement permet de prolonger la stratégie acoustique de lutte contre le bruit à mesure que la distance de communication s'allonge. Il permet donc à la parole humaine de développer naturellement des propriétés qui élaborent un véritable système de télécommunication. Afin d'analyser ces différents aspects, la méthodologie proposée fait appel aux outils de la phonétique, de la phonologie, de la bioacoustique, de la sociolinguistique, de la psychoacoustique et de la psycholinguistique.

This volume provides an up-to-date discussion of a foundational issue that has recently taken centre stage in linguistic typology and which is relevant to the language sciences more generally: To what extent can cross-linguistic generalizations, i.e. statistical universals of linguistic structure, be explained by the diachronic sources of these structures? Everyone agrees that typological distributions are the result of complex histories, as “languages evolve into the variation states to which synchronic universals pertain” (Hawkins 1988). However, an increasingly popular line of argumentation holds that many, perhaps most, typological regularities are long-term reflections of their diachronic sources, rather than being ‘target-driven’ by overarching functional-adaptive motivations. On this view, recurrent pathways of reanalysis and grammaticalization can lead to uniform synchronic results, obviating the need to postulate global forces like ambiguity avoidance, processing efficiency or iconicity, especially if there is no evidence for such motivations in the genesis of the respective constructions. On the other hand, the recent typological literature is equally ripe with talk of "complex adaptive systems", "attractor states" and "cross-linguistic convergence". One may wonder, therefore, how much room is left for traditional functional-adaptive forces and how exactly they influence the diachronic trajectories that shape universal distributions. The papers in the present volume are intended to provide an accessible introduction to this debate. Covering theoretical, methodological and empirical facets of the issue at hand, they represent current ways of thinking about the role of diachronic sources in explaining grammatical universals, articulated by seasoned and budding linguists alike.

The main focus of this monograph on whistled speech is the result of a worldwide inquiry primarily based on the author’s unprecedented fieldwork and laboratory experience. The different questions raised by the origin and the evolution of whistled forms of languages are also explored, including the role of environmental constraints in the emergence of whistled speech, their phonetic and phonological typology, the cognitive processing of whistled signals, monogenesis and polygenesis scenarios, the hypothesis of a whistled system preceding voiced speech, the intricate relationship between music and language in whistling, and the convergence/divergence with whistled communication among animals (birds, dolphins and primates). This book also includes several documents and a chapter prepared in collaboration with René-Guy Busnel, a pioneer in the studies of whistled forms of languages who has worked with five different populations using whistled speech (from the late 60s to the early 90s). The author has been intensively studying this fascinating language practice for the past 12 years, including 30 months of onsite research in collaboration with the cultural representatives of approximately twenty linguistic communities around the world. Whistled speech represents an ancient traditional telecommunication system that has survived on all inhabited continents of our planet. In it, a whistle replaces the voice and carries the information. However, this practice does not replace ordinary speech but is used in a complementary way. It serves to increase the audible range, but also under certain circumstances, the degree of secrecy of spoken communications. Whistled speech is adapted to the structure of each language, to specific traditional rural activities such as hunting or shepherding, and to specific ecological milieux. It is today a severely endangered speech register that provides an alternative insight into the nature of human language.
