Book Description
"This paper examines the regimental history of a unique group of Union Civil War soldiers from Iowa, the Graybeards. Theoretically, the unit was comprised of men too old for military service, yet willing to carry out the duties of a conventional volunteer soldier in non-combatant roles. Although a sound idea on paper, in reality, the research demonstrates the inevitable outcome of men over the age of 45 being trained and disciplined as though they were of draft age by inexperienced, abusive, officers given a rare second chance in life to make their own mark." From the introduction.

Book Description
Civil War pocket diary by Andrew McKay of Washington, Iowa, member of the 37th Iowa Infantry Volunteers, dated Nov. 7, 1862-July 1, 1864. McKay, a native of Ireland, begins his entries at Camp Strong, a Civil War training camp located on Muscatine Island, Iowa, where the members of the 37th Iowa Volunteer Infantry Regiment have been ordered into rendezvous. This regiment was composed exclusively of men over 45 years of age, who, although legally exempt from military service because of their age, proposed, nevertheless, for patriotic reasons, to form a regiment of healthy old men. The regiment, known in Iowa and throughout the country as the "Gray Beard Regiment", moved to St. Louis in Jan. 1863 to guard military prisons there. The author, who proudly states that he is 65 years old (p. 125), records the regiment's move in May 1863 out to the Pacific Railway line which they patrolledfor two months, as well as assignments at Illinois prisons, in Alton (Aug. 1863-Jan. 1864) and Rock Island (Jan.-June 1864), guarding rebel prisoners. Throughout the diary, McKay maintains a severe religious tone, often mentioning the United Presbyterian Church, and describing his fellow soldiers as "ungodly". He also frequently mentions his son George McKay, and his daughters and their husbands: Martha and William Crawford, and Mary and James Barnes, also of Washington, Iowa. Last diary entry is dated July 5, 1864; McKay died in St. Louis shortly thereafter, on July 30, 1864, of disease.
