Book Description
The Reverend Thomas Hooker (1586-1647), founder of the Connecticut colony, was a Calvinist pastor and teacher of great importance to both Old and New England. To many today, Hooker is best known for his last great work, A Survey of the Summe of Church Discipline (1648), his definitive defense of the congregational way. This study attempts to demonstrate that Hooker was first and foremost a "physician" of the soul who specialized as a psychologist of conversion; therein lay his greatest contribution to church and society, rather than (as is also often thought) his role as "the first democrat." Contents: The Life and Work of Thomas Hooker; Hooker's Morphology of Conversion: Contextual Considerations; Hooker's Morphology of Conversion: Early Formulations; Hooker's Preparationist Theology as Formulated in His Writings from the Antinomian Period and Beyond.

Richard Hooker and his Early Doctrine of Justification
Author: Corneliu C. Simut
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351150022
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 194
Book Description
Richard Hooker and his Early Doctrine of Justification explores the doctrine of justification, the doctrine of faith and grace, and the doctrine of Scripture and use of reason in the early theology of Richard Hooker. In order to prove that Hooker was a Protestant Reformed theologian, Simuþ concentrates on Hooker‘s doctrine of justification as reflected in his Learned Discourse of Justification, which is the most important work of his early theology. Unlike previous books on Hooker which use primarily the theology of Luther and Calvin to draw conclusions, this book brings together quotations and ideas from the works of Luther, Melanchthon, Zwingli, Bucer, Calvin and Beza to show that Hooker was a Protestant Reformed theologian. Simuþ also discusses the theological context of Hooker‘s career by offering an analysis of the doctrine of justification in the theology of John Jewel, John Whitgift (Hooker‘s patrons), and Thomas Cartwright and Walter Travers (Hooker‘s Puritan opponents).

Prepared by Grace, for Grace
Author: Joel R. Beeke
Publisher: Reformation Heritage Books
ISBN: 1601782357
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 314
Book Description
Few teachings of the Puritans have provoked such strong reactions and conflicting interpretations as their views on preparing for saving faith. Many twentieth-century scholars dismissed preparation as a prime example of regression from the Reformed doctrine of grace for a man-centered legalism. In Prepared by Grace, for Grace , Joel Beeke and Paul Smalley make careful analysis of the Puritan understanding of preparatory grace, demonstrate its fundamental continuity with the Reformed tradition, and identify matters where even the Puritans disagreed among themselves. Clearing away the many misconceptions and associated accusations of preparationism, this study is sure to be the standard work on how the Puritans understood the ordinary way God leads sinners to Christ. Table of Contents: Introduction: The Question of Preparationism 1. Preparation and Modern Scholarship 2. Precedents to Puritan Preparation: Augustine to Calvin 3. Preparation and Early English Puritans: Perkins, Sibbes, and Preston 4. Preparation for Conversion: William Ames 5. Preparation in Early New England (I): Thomas Hooker 6. Preparation in Early New England (II): Shepard and Pemble 7. Preparation and the Antinomian Controversy: John Cotton 8. Preparation at the Pinnacle of Puritanism: Westminster, Burroughs, and Guthrie 9. Preparation under a Scholastic Lens: Norton 10. Preparation and Later Puritan Critiques: Goodwin and Firmin 11. Later Puritan Preparation: Flavel and Bunyan 12. Jonathan Edwards and Seeking God 13. Continental Reformed Perspectives: Zwingli to Witsius 14. A Baptist at the Crossroads
Author: Obbie Tyler Todd
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1725297035
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 124
Book Description
South Carolina Baptist Richard Furman (1755–1825) personified a host of seeming contradictions. As a Regular Baptist baptized by a Separate Baptist, an ardent patriot with puritan sensibilities, a Federalist who zealously defended religious liberty, and a slave-owning aristocrat who associated with backwoods revivalists, Furman is a complex figure in American history. His doctrine of atonement exhibited this same complexity, as he uniquely held to both a penal substitutionary theory of the atonement as well as to a moral governmental view, models of the atonement that were often conceived as mutually exclusive in the nineteenth century. Furman was the first of his American Baptist kind to attempt to integrate these two models. As a Baptist standing at the political, cultural, and theological crossroads of America, Furman blended Edwardsean and confessional Calvinism, Regular and Separate Baptist traditions, and a host of other elements into his theology, laying the groundwork for an entire generation of Southern Baptists who followed in his theological footsteps.
