Book Description
Handcuffs and Chain Link enters the immigration debate by addressing one of its most controversial aspects: the criminalization both of extralegal immigration to the United States and of immigrants themselves in popular and political discourse. Looking at the factors that led up to criminalization, Benjamin Gonzalez O’Brien points to the alternative approach of the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 and how its ultimate demise served to negatively reinforce the fictitious association of extralegal immigrants with criminality. Crucial to Gonzalez O’Brien’s account thus is the concept of the critical policy failure—a piece of legislation that attempts a radically different approach to a major issue but has shortcomings that ultimately further entrench the approach it was designed to supplant. The IRCA was just such a piece of legislation. It highlighted the contributions of the undocumented and offered amnesty to some while attempting to stem the flow of extralegal immigration by holding employers accountable for hiring the undocumented. The failure of this effort at decriminalization prompted a return to criminalization with a vengeance, leading to the stalemate on immigration policy that persists to this day.

Book Description
Why the Greeks? How did it happen that these people--out of all Mediterranean societies--developed democratic systems of government? The outstanding German historian of the ancient world, Christian Meier, reconstructs the process of political thinking in Greek culture that led to democracy. He demonstrates that the civic identity of the Athenians was a direct precondition for the practical reality of this form of government. Meier shows how the structure of Greek communal life gave individuals a civic role and discusses a crucial reform that institutionalized the idea of equality before the law. In Greek drama--specifically Aeschylus' Oresteia--he finds reflections of the ascendancy of civil law and of a politicizing of life in the city-state. He examines the role of the leader as well as citizen participation in Athenian democracy and describes an ancient equivalent of the idea of social progress. He also contrasts the fifth-century Greek political world with today's world, drawing revealing comparisons. The Greek Discovery of Politics is important reading for ancient historians, classicists, political scientists, and anyone interested in the history of political thought or in the culture of ancient Greece.

Book Description
A deathbed oath triggers a cross-country vendetta... A son swears a sacred oath of vengeance to his dying mother. He's a hitman for the Mafia, but his next string of killings won't be business. They're strictly personal. The first victim is a night watchman in New York City. Then a retired engineer near Baltimore. A Scranton jeweler. An Arizona real estate salesman. A small time Hollywood agent. All five executed with .22 slug in the head. Only one man sees the pattern. Dan Forrest, a reporter for a tabloid scandal sheet, has a hunch. Soon he's got the story of the year. But one false move and he'll be making news himself - on the obituary page. Because now he's left his typewriter for a coast-to-coast race with the killer to find the final link in the Chain of Vengeance. William Hallstead is the author of twenty-one books, including six suspense novels. He is also a flight instructor and a glider pilot, logging 1,100 flying hours.

Book Description
Sixteen-year-old Sarah Kelly never expected to meet the Devil's daughter. She only sought innocent dancing in the moonlight, not a coven entranced by their dark priestess. To keep their secret risks her own damnation, but to condemn them may invoke the accusing remnants of Salem to rise again.
