Excerpt from Minutes, Catawba River Baptist Association of North Carolina: 137th Annual Session, October 27-28, 1966 Mr. Tiller was born, to Spurgeon and Sally Tiller in Hart County, near Hartwell, Georgia, on September 2, 1926. He was saved and baptized at age 9, in the West End Baptist Church in Asheville, N. C. (now called Haywood Street Baptist Church). Beginning his preaching ministry at age 13, Mr. Tiller was ordained at age 18 on October 16, 1944, and called the same year in November as pastor of Starnes Cove Baptist Church. His second pastorate is at Burkemont in this Association, where he was called on June 24, 1951, as the church's first full-time pastor. There have been more than 700 additions to the church roll since his coming. Mr. Tiller received his education at Toccoa Falls Institute, Toccoa Falls, Georgia; he attended gardner-webb College, and has done correspondence work with Burton College and Seminary at Manitou Springs, Colorado. Since then he has served seven churches. At present he is pastor of Abee's Grove Baptist Church, Valdese, from Which he Will retire December 29, 1991. He has served this church since May, 1976. He also taught at Fruitland Baptist Bible Insti tute for 25 years. He has taught more than 75 Seminary Extension Courses.
