This thesis focuses on the ethical issues of the use of animals in art and how these issues arise due to the attitudes towards animals within society. The artworks included in discussion: Adel Abdessemed Don't Trust Me (2008); Guillermo Habacuc Vargas, Exposicion N° 1 (2007); Tinkebell, My Dearest Cat Pinkjelte (2004); Damien Hirst, The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living (1991); Eduardo Kac, GFP Bunny (2000); Ondrej Brody and Kristofer Paetau, Dog Carpets (2007); and Olly Williams, Suzi Winstanley, and Greg Williams, Shark Bite (1997). Discussion of the artworks will be put into context through comparisons of current animal welfare issues within society, i.e., factory farming, conservation of species, and animal experimentation. The attitudes that have allowed these animal welfare issues to exist in society are the same attitudes that have led to it becoming acceptable to utilize animals as objects by artists. The four former artists within the above list are examples of artists that push the boundaries of what is considered unethical and the three latter artists are examples of artists that show signs of progress in ethical consideration of the use of animals in art and society. The proposal of regulations and laws to limit the use of animals in art will also be discussed as a potential solution for the unethical treatment of animals in art.

This book provides reflection on the increasingly blurry boundaries that characterize the human-animal relationship. In the Anthropocene humans and animals have come closer together and this asks for rethinking old divisions. Firstly, new scientific insights and technological advances lead to a blurring of the boundaries between animals and humans. Secondly, our increasing influence on nature leads to a rethinking of the old distinction between individual animal ethics and collectivist environmental ethics. Thirdly, ongoing urbanization and destruction of animal habitats leads to a blurring between the categories of wild and domesticated animals. Finally, globalization and global climate change have led to the fragmentation of natural habitats, blurring the old distinction between in situ and ex situ conservation. In this book, researchers at the cutting edge of their fields systematically examine the broad field of human-animal relations, dealing with wild, liminal, and domestic animals, with conservation, and zoos, and with technologies such as biomimicry. This book is timely in that it explores the new directions in which our thinking about the human-animal relationship are developing. This is the first multidisciplinary book that addresses the ethics of fur. Whatever might have been true of the past, the production of fur is now morally problematic in terms of both necessity and suffering. There is no necessity in killing animals for nonessential purposes, such as adornment, fashion, or vanity. The argument for utility simply doesn’t hold up. Alternative clothing is now readily available, enduring, and less costly. Worse still, since we know that the animals exploited are sentient, causing them suffering or making animals liable to suffering is arguably intrinsically wrong. The purpose of this volume is to open up and advance further the ethical, political, and specifically legislative endeavors now moving at pace and to encourage the anti-fur movement. That said, there is much to learn from this book about the history, culture, and political arguments for and against fur that should interest scholars and students, as well as those engaged on either side of the debate. It is not common for academics to engage with pressing and contentious moral issues, and we pay tribute to our eighteen contributors for leading the way.
