Book Description
The historical approach to the separation of radon from water is liberation of the radon from the sample by boiling under vacuum in the presence of a strong acid; flushing the liberated radon, with an inert gas, into an ionization chamber or an alpha proportional counters and measuring the collected activity. Such an analysis requires a manipulation time of approximately one hour, a waiting period of two to three hours before measurement to allow transitory equilibrium to be reached, and finally a measurement time, resulting in 4 to 6 hours for one analysis. In addition, specialized equipment including a vacuum train is required. If it is desired to count the alpha particles from radon and its daughters in a proportional counter, absorption trains to remove all oxygen, a poor counting gas, are required. The method presented herein requires only 20--25 minutes for a complete analysis and except for the beta counter utilizes standard laboratory equipment.

WHO Handbook on Indoor Radon
Author: World Health Organization
Publisher: World Health Organization
ISBN: 9241547677
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 111
Book Description
This handbook focuses on residential radon exposure from a public health point of view and provides detailed recommendations on reducing health risks from radon and sound policy options for preventing and mitigating radon exposure. The material in the handbook reflects the epidemiological evidence that indoor radon exposure is responsible for a substantial number of lung cancers in the general population. Information is provided on the selection of devices to measure radon levels and on procedures for the reliable measurement of these levels. Discussed also are control options for radon in new dwellings, radon reduction in existing dwellings as well as assessment of the costs and benefits of different radon prevention and remedial actions. Also covered are radon risk communication strategies and organization of national radon programs.--Publisher's description.

Handbook of Radioactivity Analysis
Author: Michael F. L'Annunziata
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 0123848741
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 1419
Book Description
The updated and much expanded 3e of the Handbook of Radioactivity Analysis is an authoritative reference providing the principles, practical techniques, and procedures for the accurate measurement of radioactivity from the very low levels encountered in the environment to higher levels measured in radioisotope research, clinical laboratories, biological sciences, radionuclide standardization, nuclear medicine, nuclear power, and fuel cycle facilities and in the implementation of nuclear forensic analysis and nuclear safeguards. The book describes the basic principles of radiation detection and measurement and the preparation of samples from a wide variety of matrices, assists the investigator or technician in the selection and use of appropriate radiation detectors, and presents state-of-the-art methods of analysis. Fundamentals of radiation properties, radionuclide decay, the calculations involved, and methods of detection provide the basis for a thorough understanding of the analytical procedures. The Handbook of Radioactivity Analysis, 3e, is suitable as a teaching text for university and professional training courses. - The only comprehensive reference that describes the principles of detection and practical applications of every type of radioactivity detector currently used. The new 3e is broader in scope, with revised and expanded chapters, new authors, and seven new chapters on Alpha Spectrometry, Radionuclide Standardization, Radioactive Aerosol Measurements, Environmental Radioactivity Monitoring, Marine Radioactivity Analysis, Nuclear Forensic Analysis and Analytical Techniques in Nuclear Safeguards - Discusses in detail the principles, theory and practice applied to all types of radiation detection and measurement, making it useful for both teaching and research
