Book Description
Excerpt from A History of Kansas The attempt has been made, in preparing this volume, to give, within a convenient compass, the most interesting and material occurrences and events in the history of the rise of a great Free State from a wilderness. Harrowing details and discreditable happenings have been purposely omitted. The story has been told as a record of courage and steadfastness, and increasing devotion to the principles of human freedom and national union. Events have been arranged, as nearly as possible, in the order of the years, with an occasional arrangement of the years in periods or groups, with no further classification or subdivision. No attempt has been made to "write down" to the supposed intellectual capacity of children. Students old enough to enter upon the study of the history of an American State, it is believed, will find all the statements and conclusions comprehensible. Forgotten Books uses state-of-the-art technology to digitally reconstruct the work, preserving the original format whilst repairing imperfections present in the aged copy. Book Description
Excerpt from Kansas History Finally, the author has tried to avoid the use of much contro versial matter with which the literature of Kansas history is so plentifully deluged. To eliminate all material of that character is clearly impossible, for as yet much of the most valuable of our historical writing is the work of active participants in the stirring history of our early days and necessarily is personal. Book Description
Excerpt from The Peopling of Kansas Nearly all of the state of Kansas was included in the above mentioned tract of country. That part which did not belong to the Great American Desert lies in the immediate vicinity of the Missouri river, whose sinuous course forms 150 miles of the northeastern border of Kansas. It was this part of the Missouri that formed the gate-way as it were, for entrance into a seemingly boundless prairie region lying to westward. Book Description
Excerpt from Impressions of Early Kansas As I sit by the western window and the brief winter afternoon draws toward its close, my mind turns back to dear old Waverley. Outside the wind is rising and the waning day shows gray and chill, but far away I see visions of a fair, deep blue sky, gemmed with fleecy floating clouds. Instead of deep snows and ice bound streams, are wide expanses of green fields, velvet carpeted, and sown thickly with johnny-jump-ups and dainty strawberry blossoms. Away over the far wooded hills, distance lends enchantment to the purplish haze that rests forever above the winding river; while around all is spread the fairest country that ever gladdened the eyes and hearts of men, - the beautiful prairies of Kansas. Among the many towns and embryo cities that sprang up as it were by magic on the opening of the territory in eighteen fifty-five, was my own dear town of Waverley. This ambitious little county seat was laid out in true generous Western fashion over a square mile or so of charming hill and dale, its modest frame houses, many of them built of the native black walnut, separated by wide stretches of greenest verdure. Here and there the streets led over picturesque wooden bridges, for from the hilly eastern border to the noble plateau that formed the western boundary, there was a succession of hills and hollows, varied by deep, winding ravines, each of which prisoned a brawling, pigmy torrent during the winter thaws and the spring rains. Crowning the brow of the eastern hill, was the Woodson Hotel, a many windowed frame building of two stories, looking south. In front was a wide veranda from whose pleasant shelter the wayfarer could overlook the little city and the broad wagon road with its traffic and bustle, varied now and then by slow moving ox teams, or long lines of canvas covered wagons of the countless home seekers. These wagons were filled with furniture and bedding, weary women and sunburnt children. Sometimes a stove pipe protruded through an opening in the canvas telling of an attempt at warmth and comfort when the prairie winds blew cold. Book Description
Excerpt from A Standard History of Kansas and Kansans, Vol. 1 N 0 one can ever be more conscious of the imperfections of this work than is the author. The history of Kansas, to be complete, can not be confined to the narrow bounds of two volumes. Adequately treated, there should be ten, and then there would be no dreary page. For there is no other history like Kansas history - it is an inspiration. But with whatever faults the book is burdened, it will be the model for the future historian by which to write the complete history of Kansas. It is on correct historical lines, and it is hoped that its mission and its aims will be found what the author intended - truth fearlessly told and justice served. Book Description
Excerpt from A History of Republic County, Kansas A single county in the great state of Kansas occupies but an insignificant place on the map of the world, and its people and its story are comparatively unknown. Yet the grand river of national history is formed by the union of many rills of traditions and record, flowing from a thousand counties and states all over the land. The tracing of one of these rills to its source is the province of the present little volume. It is the aim of this work to collect and preserve some of the facts of the early settlement, subsequent growth and development of one of the leading counties of a young, yet great and glorious state. The families who were early on the ground, and whose members have contributed to make the county what it is, are worthy of remembrance; and their difficulties and sorrows, labors and patriotism, should not be allowed to fall into oblivion. By a knowledge of these, the present generation will be instructed, and the future will be guided. All history, if properly written, is profitable; and there is not a country, or a city, or a hamlet, on the globe, whose history might not be more or less valuable to posterity. We trust this little volume will be the means of preserving from the empire of decay Si host of incidents, of recollections and of anecdotes relating to the land of pioneers and first settlers of the county, which, in the estimation of the historian and student of history, are of priceless value, but which otherwise would soon fade from the memories of the living. Still, a perfect and complete history of any county is one of the impossibilities, and this work may be incomplete in many particulars. Nor, indeed, is it possible for it to be otherwise, as it is not permitted any man to attain perfection. Its regions lie beyond our reach.
