Book Description
With the use of crack on the rise in American cities, there is more need than ever to understand the biological, environmental, and social factors behind cocaine addiction, as well as the pharmacological properties of cocaine that make it such an addictive drug. The Neurobiology of Cocaine Addiction helps clinicians and researchers analyze research findings and their relevance to the clinical treatment of cocaine dependency. To do this, it looks at the whole spectrum of cocaine use, from trends in cocaine-involved deaths, hospital emergencies, arrests, and treatment admissions to the specific impact the drug has on brain function. The book reports on important findings from positron emission tomography (PET) and a “binge” pattern cocaine administration mode. This will enable you to improve your understanding of how cocaine alters the pleasure/reward system of the brain and creates new instinctual needs that displace the inherent instinctual needs of hunger and sex.By reading The Neurobiology of Cocaine Addiction, you will sharpen your knowledge of the basic actions of cocaine, the factors related to daily cocaine use, the neurobiological basis of addictive diseases, and drug-induced alterations in normal physiology. You will also learn about: the coexistence of cocaine and heroin addiction cocaine’s disruption of the endogenous opioid system QEEG and how it can play a potentially useful role in drug development and planning hypotheses of sensitization in the pathophysiology of cocaine dependence factors that predict daily cocaine use among patients in a methadone maintenance program abnormalities in brain function that persist for up to six months after last cocaine use patterns of cocaine use the importance of prospective data analysis and the limitations of a self-selective study groupClinicians, researchers, psychiatrists, and other professionals in chemical dependency and narcotics rehabilitation will turn the last page of The Neurobiology of Cocaine Addiction with a better understanding of cocaine’s addictive qualities and the characteristics of the individuals who become addicted to it. You will see what headway has been made in research at some of the nation’s top laboratories, but you will also see what remains to be done. Hopefully, you will find where you can make a contribution either at the practical level, the research level, or both.

Book Description
The last several years have seen a significant increase in research on anger and its clinical treatment. As a result, anger management has become the topic of many self-help books, but there is currently no book that brings together for practitioners and scholars the diversity of therapies used to treat anger in various populations. Treatments for Anger in Specific Populations provides information and instruction on empirically supported interventions for anger in various clinical contexts, including substance abuse, PTSD, the intellectually disabled, borderline personality disorder, children and adolescents, and others. Ten chapters focus on specific populations, while two additional chapters discuss gender and culturally sensitive considerations in anger treatment. An introductory chapter by the volume editor, Ephrem Fernandez, outlines the main therapeutic approaches to anger, summarizing the boundaries between adaptive and maladaptive anger and providing a rationale for tailoring anger treatments to specific populations. For each population-specific chapter, authors provide theoretical background and literature review, followed by findings on the efficacy of each treatment. Each treatment evaluated is also clearly described in terms of clinical procedure. Further, each chapter contains a clinical case vignette illustrating the application of particular treatments to particular clients. Where appropriate, discussions of emerging and as-yet untested therapies are included. Treatments for Anger in Specific Populations is a resource to be treasured by clinicians who work regularly with anger problems and anger disorders, and the volume's careful balance of research review with important information about treatment application will also render it useful to scientists interested in anger.

Book Description
N eurotoxicology is a broad and burgeoning field of research. Its growth in recent years can be related, in part, to increased interest in and concern with the fact that a growing number of anthropogenic agents with neurotoxic potential, including pesticides, 1ead, mercury, and the polytypic byproducts of combustion and industrial production, continue to be spewed into and accumulate in the environment. In addition, there is great interest in natural products, including toxins, as sources of therapeutic agents. Indeed, it is well known that many natural toxins ofbroadly differing structure, produced or accumulated for predatory or defensive purposes, and toxic agents, accumulated incidentalIy by numerous species, function to perturb nervous tissue. Components of some of these toxins have been shown to be useful therapeutic agents and/or research reagents. Unfor of some neurotoxicants of anthropogenic ori tunately, the environmental accumulation gin, expecialIy pesticides and metals, has resulted in incidents ofhuman poisoning, some of epidemic proportion, and high levels of morbidity and mortality. Furthermore, an increasing incidence of neurobehavioral disorders, some with baffling symptoms, is confronting clinicians. It is not clear whether this is merely the re suit of increased vigi lance and/or improved diagnostics or a consequence of improved health care. In any case, the role of exposure to environmental and occupational neurotoxicants in the etiology of these phenomena, as well as neurodegenerative diseases, is coming under increasing scrutiny and investigation.
