Book Description
The purpose of this investigation was to study the effect of fluoride prophylactic agents on the fracture strength and fracture morphology of the tie-wing complex of two polycrystalline brackets, Clarity tm and Mystique®, and a monocrystalline bracket, Inspire tm. Fracture strength was measured after wires were exposed to either Prevident, Phos-flur gel, or distilled water (control). Scanning electron microscopy was used to qualitatively evaluate tie-wing fractures. A two-way ANOVA, a=.05, and Fisher-Hayter post hoc test indicated there was a significant decrease in tie-wing fracture strength following both fluoride treatments when compared to the distilled water control only with the monocrystalline bracket. None of the bracket brands exhibited any qualitative differences in tie-wing fracture patterns as a function of fluoride treatment The results suggest that using topical fluoride agents with monocrystalline brackets might be contraindicated due to increased tie-wing fracture susceptibility
