The Book of Daniel in the Hebrew Bible gives no information about Daniel’s early life or information about the queen of Babylon. The book is mostly about King Nebuchadnezzar’s increasing dementia, and little about Daniel himself. The queen is mentioned only as one who summoned Daniel to interpret the writing on the wall at Belshazzar’s feast. She was not given a name. Upon extensive research into the ancient empires of Babylonia, Assyria, Persia, China, and Egypt, the story comes forth. She was Queen Nitocris, designer and architect of the rebuilding of the City of Babylon. She was named after Queen Nitocris of Ancient Egypt, who lived 2000 years before her. Daniel was brought into her city, Babylon, as a slave. He became her spiritual teacher and she was his friend. After Daniel’s death in Persia, she carries his teachings and friendship in her heart. His teachings and her quest for purpose and love take her on adventures to China, the fabled Silk Road, India, and Egypt. The author, Carole Lunde, traveled to the middle east and Egypt. Her research for this mysterious queen, who was barely mentioned in the Hebrew Testament, caused her to investigate the ancient histories of Babylonia, Persia, and China around 550 BCE to find this queen and write her story. The author has published nine books on spirituality and Bible fiction, illuminating the lives of other nameless women in the Hebrew Testament.

The remains of ancient societies often require decades to unearth, but much longer to interpret and understand. The methods of archaeology have progressed dramatically in recent years. The “Great Whore” of the Book of Revelation—the hostile symbolization used to illustrate the author’s critique of empire—has attracted considerable attention in Revelation scholarship. Feminist scholar Tina Pippin criticizes the use of gendered metaphors—“Babylon” as a tortured woman—which she asserts reflect an inescapably androcentric, even misogynistic, perspective. Alternatively, Elisabeth Schüssler Fiorenza understands John’s rhetoric and imagery not simply in gendered terms, but in political terms as well, observing that “Babylon” relies on conventionally coded feminine language for a city. Shanell T. Smith seeks to dismantle the either/or dichotomy within the “Great Whore” debate by bringing the categories of race/ethnicity and class to bear on John’s metaphors. Her socio-cultural context impels her to be sensitive to such categories, and, therefore, leads her to hold the two elements, “woman” and “city,” in tension, rather than privileging one over the other. Using postcolonial womanist interpretation of the woman Babylon, Smith highlights the simultaneous duality of her characterization—her depiction as both a female brothel slave and as an empress or imperial city. Most remarkably, however, Smith’s reading also sheds light on her own ambivalent characterization as both a victim and participant in empire.
