Corporations are among the world's most powerful and dominant institutions. In some cases they are even surpassing the revenue-producing ability of small governments. In contrast to this economic success, globally acting companies are often accused of social and ecological misbehavior. Nevertheless, revealed affairs like the Nike-case have increased the awareness of customers, governmental organizations, trade unions and other stakeholders. For this reason during the past decades, the construct of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has gained growing attention, in both political and academic ways. While the image of socially contributing companies, acting beyond their legal duties and obligations, has a longer and more intensive history in the Anglo-Saxon countries and particularly in the United States, the concept is less implemented in central Europe. This is often explained by the fact that in these states many environmental and social responsibilities of companies are defined by laws, which are optional in Anglo-Saxon countries. These cross-national differences shall be outlined and critically analyzed within this paper, by comparing the CSR practices of Germany and the USA. Furthermore the question shall be answered to which extend the institutional background of corporations can shape their behavior and finally lead to a high or weak adoption of corporate social practices.

While the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities of small firms have been analysed to some extent, their engagement in international networks relating to CSR is less understood. Most of these networks primarily address the needs of multinational corporations. Surprisingly, however, the number of small firms participating in such institutions has substantially increased over recent years. But what is the reason for this new interest of SME in institutional forms of CSR? Based on a qualitative empirical study of German small firms’ participation in the most prominent CSR institution, the UN Global Compact, this book explores the drivers for small firm participation. The motivations are complex and do not follow the same hierarchical order associated with large business behaviour. Rather, reasons for institutional engagement suggest a heterarchical structure, where alignment is contingent upon factors such as individual CSR perception, self-conception or social environment. The book explains why small firms prefer to engage in sustainable development within institutionalised forms of CSR rather than act in isolation, and provides recommendations on how to support and thus increase SME participation in institutionalised forms of civic engagement.

Over the past four decades many European welfare states have seen an increasing involvement of the commercial sector in their mixed economies of welfare. One aspect of this development that has yet to be fully understood in social policy analysis is the engagement of businesses to address social problems, such as social exclusion, through activities labelled as 'corporate social responsibility' ('CSR'). Although CSR has gained increasing currency on both national and international policy agendas since the 1990s, it remains a topic which is predominantly researched in business schools and from a business perspective. This book aims to redress this imbalance by focusing on the social aspect of CSR. Based on interviews with a wide spectrum of people who work with CSR professionally in England, Denmark and in the EU Commission, the book argues that when CSR is linked to social exclusion it is a way of renegotiating responsibilities in mixed economies of welfare. The focus of this research is the area of CSR and corporations’ increasing attention towards legitimising their existence within civil society. Reporting on CSR becomes increasingly important, not only in international business, but also as a corporate tool to actively legitimise existence. CSR increasingly institutionalises the form of management guidelines and frameworks as well as via NGOs. This research focuses on German and British corporations’ construction and professionalisation of CSR strategies and how corporations perceive legitimacy. This study additionally includes insights into institutional differences of CSR and corporations’ legitimacy strategies by comparing two different forms of capitalisms. This dissertation met these two main research aims through an extensive literature review, focussing particularly on legitimacy. In addition, template analysis of ten German and ten British corporations as well as critical discourse analysis was carried out. This dissertation produced a number of key findings. Firstly, the recent academic body of literature confirms an increasing institutionalisation of CSR. Secondly, this research diagnoses a corporation-led process of achieving legitimacy. Thirdly, despite national differences corporations seek acceptance and anchor their own responsibility strategies within frameworks of guiding institutions, which function as a ‘legitimacy tool’. The main conclusions drawn from this research were: that current approaches to explaining corporations’ legitimacy are insufficient because they focus solely on an external perspective, not accounting for internally established CSR initiatives to legitimise, and furthermore inconsiderate of corporations’ increasing independency. This research argues for an extended approach, which additionally considers corporations two-way approach to legitimise as well as an active management of legitimisation as an expression of new corporate governance.
