A volume of reports and memoranda commissioned for the Joint Intelligence Sub-Committee (JIC). The JIC was formed of representatives from the intelligence services, the armed services, and the Foreign Office. Its purpose was to assess military, security, and foreign policy requirements and coordinate Britain's intelligence organisations accordingly. A vast range of international and domestic issues are investigated and analysed in the JIC's reports. The principal topic of discussion for the documents in this file is the development and production of biological weapons before and during the Second World War, including the state of research in Germany, Britain, the United States of America, Italy, and Japan; the potential threat and military value of biological weapons; possible counter-measures and methods of defence; German research facilities and equipment captured during the liberation of France; potential methods of deployment, such as aerial bombing; and the weaponisation of diseases and animals.
